Biggest jump in Gaming?

Cannot decide between

Quake and not just for OpenGL but first death match too
Unreal for jaw dropping effects (even if polygon count was too high at times)
Deus Ex (level design 2nd to none but another game where polygon count was too high for suggested hardware)
GTA yes the first one
Half-life for its exceptional attention to detail

But half-life 2 wins for me mostly thanks to physics which changed games forever

eeing quake 2 and tombraider 1 running for the first time in 3d on a voodoo 3dfx card

I had a crappy matrox card till I went out and bought Quake 2 (on release day) then went back to Game of all places the day after and bought a voodoo2 card so I could appreciate it

Graphics!

Going from pure text based script games to games that had some form of graphical representation on screen was sort of major leap in gaming.

No one think when reading the thread title, Biggest Jump, as in say leaps you can do with Alex Mercer in Prototype, etc etc? :D
* Ah I see Dutchman on my level. :)

I would say from the megadrive/SNES to the PS1. that was when gaming game out of the back street shops and into the highstreet.

Nah - I remember when Speccy games were in places like WH Smiths and Woolworths, and there were machines set up you could actually play about with.

You know, I just scrapped what I was going to say and go with the SNES. I remember the first time I walked past a shop and saw Pilot Wings with it's mode 7 trickery. Utterly jaw-dropping at the time.

I remember being amazed the first time I plugged my brand new half meg upgarde into my Amiga 500. First game that required it was Prince of Persia. the level of detail in the character animation blew me away.

Trying to stay focussed on PC's initially for me it was the internet. As soon as I had a connection I started downloading old game ROM's and emulators (from Daves vgc, etc).

Being able to play games like Double Dragon, etc. arcade perfect was awesome. Then I started playing Doom, Quake, Kingpin, etc. all the way up to starting my first MMO which was Asherons Call. Bye bye life for a good long time. Constantly up until 2-4AM on this!

Good days and a lot of good friends on that game.

It has to be GLQuake on the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card... went from 320x240 8bit to 640x480 16bit filtered and doubled the frame rate. We haven't seen as significant a jump since and aren't likely to until/if 3D or VR take off.

I bet I'm alone here but up there was the ability to fly over the whole of England and Wales in photo scenery. With the update to 16x better res in FSX looking down at the ground it could be real.

Other than that, pong because it was the first and started the whole thing off, Wolfenstein 3D and as I love car racing Grand Prix Legends. Still played by many in online leagues more than 10 years after it came out.

Sonic, Dune and Doom was a major jump for me when they were first released on the Megadrive. After that I would say Quake_GL and Mech Warroirs 2 with the 3dfx GL patch. Ulitma Online, Everquest 2 and WOW were all big jumps. Battlezone almost forgot that.

Of all of them I would say Dune on the megadrive and Battlezone on the PC.

I'd agree with Half-Life and add Counter-Strike. I'd played nothing like it at the time.

Counter-Strike is still going strong 10 years later haha. A testament to just how good it was.

Why is everyone saying Quake GL? Quake was and still is and amazing game, i remember trying the GL patch and it seemed to make it worse. Well, not worse, it looked more smooth and played much better but Quake to me was a dark and old type of game. Meant to be played in software mode, either 640x480 or 320x240. No need for open GL and 1024x768. Unreal was for that

Edit - Just like Doom, Im playing through Zdoom i think it is now (or Jdoom) in 320x240 mode, software everything with original sounds and non of the stupid new shadow, lighting and smoothing effects.

Biggest jump in gaming for me was Mario sprites > FF7 Polygons! :D

I was 6 when it came out and I was bedazzled by it! :p

As far as graphics are concerned.. the jump from playing Doom to Medal of Honor Allied Assault for me...just looked amazing and played so well at the time.

Far Cry was the next jump with it's amazing tropical beaches.

Quake & OpenGL.

And a left field suggestion: Rise of the Triad! Anyone remember that game?
