bike riding a few times a week.

yeh they're were 2 sections where a struggled a bit on the massive hills or the average speed would have been a bit better than that.

can only get better though.

I decided a couple of months ago, like yourself, to get fit by riding to and from work instead of getting the bus. It is a 9 mile round trip so am doing 45 miles a week. I have also just started going out with some mates on the weekend who have been mountain biking for years, but only on the weekend and I am leading the group with ease. Thats also another 20 miles on a Sunday morning through woods / tracks.

I feel great.

Speed comes with practise. 40 miles is a good distance. Keep going.

yea I struggled to maintain 14mph when I started :o can sprint up to 20mph for a few minutes at a time now :D

not doing anything special just getting out and riding.

although my average speed always end's up poop on rides because of where I ride.

I wouldn't worry about speed until you gradually stop improving and need to mix things up a bit

think I'll get 20miles in later since there's not much strong gusting happening today :O

Great thread revival! Well done on sticking with it! Six months and near as damned a stone lighter I'm still really enjoying cycling to work. Changed sites, so I'm slightly further away now, but it's still considerably faster to ride to work than drive.

epic work there dude, keep it up and you'll find yourself getting faster and lighter in no time! it's always worth going by a new route to keep things interesting!

I started cycling to work 3 times a week about 2 months ago!

Was great to read through your thread teen as I've already been through several of the 'humps' you found - wanting to collapse, sore arse, getting better etc!

I'm cycling to work (6.2 miles each way) 3 times a week after not being on a bike for 15+ years! I was slightly overweight before - 14.5 stone, I'm 6'7" and always been fairly heavy set. I'm finding it much easier now, but all it takes is the wind to blow the wrong way and I struggle! Cardio is my problem now, my stamina has always been good - I can keep going until I feel dizzy!

I've not taken a look at the mapmyride website yet, but how are you plotting things? Got a GPS device of some kind and heartrate watch etc?

Would be good to find a nice easy way to check my progress - I'm too busy to cycle for recreational purposes, but for work it's quicker than my car (on the way home).

I've lost over half a stone already, not changed diet and don't really have any other regular exercise... Not sure if I'm enjoying it yet, as didn't start until the cooler weather (to help stop me overheating!) and I've got soaked a few times! :)

Based on that it's primarily cardiovascular fitness that you want so go for it, don't overdo it at the start and injure yourself but apart from that it sounds fine. If you're running out of energy it might be a diet thing as well, it will unsurprisingly have a huge impact on how you feel.

Good point, if you eat **** you'll feel **** :p

Hi Mate, do you have an ios / android phone at all? If so there are various apps you can use - I use Strava for running

I'm on iSheep so I'll look around for something free... Unsure how good the GPS will be as have my phone in my backpack...!

Good luck with the 50 miles!
