I carry tools with me, mainly because my bike is old and I do ride how I ride. So, every ride when someone needs a spanner, screwdriver or other tool they know who to ask. :p Once I saved my mate from calling recovery, its handy to have tools with you. :)

My 2005 SV650S cut out on me in this horrid rain on my way home. Got onto to the QEII bridge (Dartford Crossing) and it was struggling to rev past 5-6k unless I dropped a gear or two. Opening the throttle made it rev but no acceleration for a few seconds then felt like the rear was spinning or the clutch was slipping, only a 1/4 throttle mind you. The got to the lights and it felt normal so sat the few miles at 50 in 5th gear and it felt like it was reluctant to do anything but sit there at 50 in 5th and then it cut out on me but thankfully I was just on the sliproad and had enough room to stop. After a few mins of looking for leaks I started it up again and it was happy at 800rpm idle which is lower than its normal idle (1100-1300) but didnt want to rev and cut out. Start it up again and this time it revved but but sounded like the front pot was not firing and it was knocking maybe? Got a whiff of unburnt fuel (had filled up 20 miles before this) and then a few more revs and it was back to both pots farting away. Quickly jumped on and did the 30mph last leg home but it felt really rough. It is due a chain and sprocket and a service but I am hoping it was water on the front spark. Will let it dry and then check the plug lead in the morning.

Any other thoughts on this? Bike is at 35k and does 60 miles a day mostly M'way speeds and has been solid for the last 13 months.

Cheers, Brack.

A common issue with the sv650 is the front cylinder cutting out due to water thrown up from the front wheel onto the HT lead and plug.

Pull the ht lead and dry it and the plug out, plenty of wd40 then look at some way of shielding it.

Sounds like front cylinder was misfiring due to the water from the rain getting into the front sparkplug.

How many people carry some form of tool kit on their bike be it the OEM or a couple of spanners they've thrown together?

When touring, the OEM kit, Leatherman, puncture repair kit, hostage tape and some parachute cord*.

* and a mobile phone, European breakdown, a credit card and some cash.

You can use a bit of bathroom sealant on the top of the plug around the edge, then it can be peeled off. But what I did on my SV650 was get a Fender Extender, since then no issues. Mine is a Curvy, but same principle.
