Billion 7800N -early thoughts

Out of my 4 routers, they all read 48 to 48.5DB except the 7800n which reads 55DB.

Strange thing is my Billion 7700N reads 48.5 when all ADSL2 options are turned off, when you turn those options off in the 7800N it makes no difference to the attenuation reading it still keeps the high reading, where as the 7700 reading drops by 6.5 DB.

I wouldn't worry, my 7800 reports a +7dB gain in attenuation compared to all my other routers but it syncs at the same speeds (marginally higher) so it's probably just down to the way it reports things/sensitivity of the modem.

Fine, if you have a decent ISP.

Most people tinkering are using the horrible BT Ipstream profiling system, so they tweak to get to the next profile (as most of the time they've been set to a 9/12/15dB margin by the exchange.

Hi guys,

Been up and running now since Saturday and its been rock solid! Great bit of kit.

My stats:

I used to be on a 3mb profile with my 2700hgv, really hoping to get back to that? But the connection doesn't seem to want to re-sync :p

How do I change my snr...

Also, I'm only on maxdsl; do I need to change any settings here?

Cheers!

I have just bought a Billion 7800 (not N) from Amazon and it will be here tomorrow as I have Prime. I don't need wireless as I already have another router doing this.

Apart from the wireless are both routers exactly the same?

Thanks.

I've just bought a Billion 7800N. I used http://192.168.1.254/snr.cgi to reduce my SNR margin from 15 dB down to 4.5 dB. This increased my sync rate from 2272 to 4096. The line appears to be stable at this speed (no disconnects for 2 days so far), and I can see my BRAS profile has increased from 2000 to 3500 (yay!). However, my speed test results at www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and www.speedtest.net don't seem to have changed at all, with my download speed remaining around 2 Mbps.

Have I reduced the SNR margin too far? Could the increased sync rate be cancelled out by an increased bit error rate? Or am I just seeing the effect of congestion at the exchange? I've installed RouterStats, but I'm unsure how to interpret the graphs and statistics.

Should I leave the router alone for 10 days to give the equipment at the exchange the opportunity to readjust the SNR margin to what it thinks is best? Is it worth asking the ISP if they can request the line be retrained? I'm reluctant to make too many changes at the router end, as the exchange presumably interprets each resync as a line error.

dewi, I think it can take a while for the line to settle

My connection is 8mbit, it was on about 2 for the first few days, then suddenly jumped up to 8.

This was on a new line mind
