Billion 7800N

so are we saying that a Netgear DGN2000 or speedtouch would be better for a poor line....over the billion?

This is what makes it so frustrating. There is "no" definite answer to that question. So many variables. Pretty much a "suck it and see".

As an example... I have two Speedtouch 585v6's, one on release 6 firmware and one on much later release 7 firmware. The one on release 6 firmware is rock solid (my line is some 3km from exchange) and I've NEVER known it to drop the connection (unless there is a line fault) but the one on release 7 is not so good. I also own a Zoom X6 and that's absolute crap under any circumstance.

What I would like to know is, has the Billion 7800N reduced the SNR drop at night or does your SNR naturally not drop that much?

Only way to tell, run Router stats on your old modem for 24 hours and lets see what that says.

Though this does raise a question that I've pondered on a few times over the years:

and that's... do all ADSL modem/routers calculate the SNRM in the same way.
IE. is my Speedtouch being optimistic and the 7800N showing a more accurate representation of what's going on??? Got to be honest, I just don't know.

Though I can comment that every other ADSL modem/router that I've tried on my line over the years, has show a fairly stable SNRM during the dusk to dawn priod. The Billion is the first one that has "apparently" show a significant drop during this period.

Confused I am. Strangely, that's the title of a thread I started on the Think broadband forum a while back about ADSL2+

Mine rides up and down about 2dB or so, which is consistent with my last house in Bristol. The blip was cause by me upgrading the web and database servers on Thursday / Friday

It's all to do with the EMI in your local area caused by faulty appliances, dodgy street lights, boilers etc.

What do you think?

That looks OK. But what does the improtant 4PM to 6PM period look like now?

PS. I see that mine re-sync'd around 4PM today. ADSL2+ definitely seems a bit more touchy (as expected I suppose) on my line. ADSL max never went down. Think I'l give the ISP a phone and ask them to get Interleaving switched on.

With the SNR dropping less (at the moment), I might try 6dB tomorrow. The SNR should drop to about 4.5 to 4dB which should be enough for the Billion to maintain a stable connection (hopefully).

Not always a linear thing but I shall be interested to see how you go. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I'm going to give the Billion one more chance. I have tweaked the SNR down to about 3.5dB and I am going to see how the router does tonight. Here are the stats:
