Black Mesa Source

Had to laugh at the scientist crushing the head crab with a monitor, celebrating then one gets him from behind, cant recall if that was in the original or not.

finally finished downloading using chip.de mirror 1.4mbps :D

gonna seed for a few days while playing even tho its only 50kbps every little helps

I have a sneaking suspicion Gordon Freeman's jump height has been set too low. I've gotten to a part where I'm clearly supposed to jump up a staircase of boxes to reach a vent, but I can't jump high enough to get on top of the first box. There was a similar thing earlier where my jump was too low to get through a hole in the wall, but I managed to get through by putting a chair there. Has anyone else been having this problem, or is there some other solution I haven't seen?

I was in the original. I think the point was to explain where the headcrab zombies came from, just in case the player was so monumentally stupid to have not already figured it out by that point.

Jumping while crouched is working for me so far.

If it can do HL2, I can't really see any reason for it not to handle this.

Wellllll, that's the thing. HL2 is very much at the edge of what this poor dear can manage, so it would really be a case of exactly how well optimised it is/isn't. I'm talking, just about 30fps on HL2 (if that!)

I mean, are they using some of the later Source engine bells-and-whistles like deformable terrain and HDR, is this more of just a straight up re-skin, fancy texture job?

First funny spotted!

google for half life crouch jump.

Crouch jumping is especially prominent in the Half-Life series and other games running on Valve's game engines, since there it actually makes the player jump higher and reach places they wouldn't be able to reach with regular jumping.

Is there some trick to that? My jumps are even lower if I jump while crouched.
Not that I know of, I'm sure the game mentioned something about crouching while jumping on boxes quite near the beginning. I dunno, maybe I wasn't paying attention and it said nothing of the sort, it's working for me though either way and I'm pretty certain the crouch is why because his normal jump is so pathetic even a crate is too high.

Err hang on. You can play it via your steam games library. So...why do people keep saying about waiting for it to "be on steam". What's the difference? What's the advantage -if there is one - of getting it officially via steam I mean if it becomes available?

I just downloaded the single 7zip file, extracted it then put the folder in source mods and restarted steam. It shows up in game library :p

The "STEAM VERSION" will just do exactly the same thing.

Really enjoying it so far, just up to 'office complex'. Hasn't disappointed (so far :p) and I want it to last a while so might give it a rest till tomorrow. Ended up getting it via torrent, shows how effective they can be for the right stuff, will probably leave my comp uploading over the weekend (only 100kbs but should get a ratio of 2-3 by then).

Auto updates and such (maybe steam achievements and steam server multiplayer could be a possibility i imagine).

I've played about 2 hours worth, not quite up to the surface yet but really enjoying the play through. The graphics are actually better than I was expecting considering how long ago they started making it. This has to be the most amazing mods ever produced. HL1 is etched into my brain and it's fun to spot all the similarities and differences. So far so good!

It's because there's about 100 seeds for about 10000 leaches, torrents are fundamentally flawed.

Couldn't disagree more. I read this many years ago and found it fascinating (possibly helps that I'm an Economics major): http://www.bittorrent.org/bittorrentecon.pdf

Most distribution methods (HTTP, FTP etc) have fewer than 100 seeds per 10000 leechers, it is just that they typically have extremely fast uploads to distribute between all those users. If instead of 10 FTP/HTTP sites you had 10 torrents seeds on the same connection, it should be at least as effective (assuming all else equal i.e. ease of use of client, no throttling of certain protocols etc).

Torrents get a bad name for various reasons but it is not IMO due to a 'fundamental flaw' in the protocol, it is usually down to factors like not enough superfast seeds e.g. a lot of people mostly experience torrents for illegal content where there aren't official, permanent seeds on Gbit+ connections, or configuration issues interfering (router software, ISP throttling etc).
