Black Mesa

I found it odd that it was announced it would 'definately' be released at the end of 2010 (and was posted in Nov 2010, or something close to the date) was suddenly delayed indefinately - how can you be so close to release, then delay for so long?

I wondered if it had been snapped up by some company for a proper, paid release...

It looks nice, but it will never come out. This mod has been rumbling along since before the Internet. Since before computers. Since before electricity. Since before the wheel. That's right, instead of actually developing the mod, they've been putting all their efforts into a time machine just so they can give it the longest development time of any thing ever.

These quotes all seem to go back to the webmaster of the site, not the acvtual devs of the mod.
The black mesa devs have a forum of their own. They have responded to this news in exactly the same way they have responded to all previous false rumours of black mesa's impending release: complete silence.

It looks to me like the usual false rumours that spring up from time time.

Also, the article above said that BM has had one projected release date (2009). That's in correct. The devs also promised (repeatedly, when questioned) in November 2010, that it would definitely before the end of that year. You've got to wonder if they know what they are doing, if they could be certain of its near imminent release, and yet, faild to meet it and still over a year later, haven't managed it. What could cause that?

Edit: also, this a response from the Black Mesa project leader to a question about this rumour:

Rumour officially scuppered.

Yeah, much like Ep3/HL3, a lot of my hype for this has been slowly dispelled these past years. Still check BM forums regularly and will be downloading on day-one of course.

I think the internet will literally explode should the release of either of these ever be (reliably) announced.

Oh and lolbanzai :D

HL3/Ep3/BM are all games which could actually be released with no hype and sell just as well. You just log into Steam, and see on the main page under new releases 'Half Life 3'. No need to pay for marketing, the internet will explode, and all the game news websites would have that on their front page.

They won't do that, it would be pretty silly, but they could!

I haven't paid much attention to this for the last couple of years (so the last time there was a real update) and as great as HL1 was i dont know if i would want to play a game that has taken this long... the Source engine is not something to wait for, you may as well just go and play the original again really as graphics are not going to be the selling point for this.

I dont know why they dont just release it as episodic content and then even have a little donation or nominal fee to dl, it would give them some cash would give us the bloody game and splitting it into parts means they would be able to continue working on it.

yeah cos episodic content means games get released quicker......oh wait....

They can't charge for it in any way, not even donations, otherwise Valve would be all over them for copyright.

AFAIK Valve has given them the green light to make it as long as they make nothing from it and it's released 100% free.

Very ambitious project which looked very promising and would give a classic PC title a much needed update graphically, however has failed to materialise for what could be a number of reasons.

Its certainly a time consuming project, it’s a lot to expect an independent team of volunteers to update a game as big as Half Life however its most certainly possible, as its been done before with cinemod.

I think it’s a bit of a shame the projected release dates have been missed and nothing else really mentioned.

If they ever get it basically complete I think Valve should (somehow) help them, which would show (and encourage) the community that they still care about the people who mod using the source engine. After all, it was the community that helped push Half-Life and associated mods into the legendary status it has.
