Blackberry 9900/9930

I think this thread should be closed until eveyone who wants one has managed to get their hands on one, so we don't have to read about you lot loving yours so much while we sit here writing text messages on 1st edition Nokias!

I picked my Nokia 6300 up yesterday as not transferred my number over yet, just typing a text on it felt very weird ;)

Robbo my friend, can you email on my email trust please buddy...i need to ask you something plus add me to BBM you tart...ill give you my PIN when you have emailed me:p

Dont be shy dude, i dont bite and i dont want your babies either:p:D

Robbo any chance you could take a picture outside with the 9900 & iPhone 4 and upload them both, uncompressed? thanks

As requested!

I used the N8 as well (for unfairness :p). The test conditions weren't perfect so it's hardly a massively fair test but it should give you an idea of the images under decent lighting. I didn't adjust any settings on any of the phones, it's all standard.

BB 9900 (5MP) - Link

iPhone 4 (5MP) - Link

Nokia N8 (12MP) - Link

And as you can see here, when cropped a bit, the differences start to become smaller (click to enlarge) -

If there is anything more specific you want me to photograph, just say. I assumed most people know what an 8 pack of Coca Cola looks like so it's easier to imagine what it should look like in reality. :p

Granted I'm no expert, but I really can't tell between the three.

The vast majority of pics people will take with their phones will end up on Facebook or emailed to their mates etc so I think it's perfectly acceptable. Anyone looking to take serious, high quality pics that will be viewed actual size can do so with an actual camera.

Indeed, its also something i was discussing with Robbo on BBM a hr or so ago.

From the various pics of the 9900 i have seen, it seems to be ok for 5mp...a lot of people moaning about it being an EDOF type of lense but maybe my eyes are failing me but the pics look good so far.

Also pretty impressed with the video recording quality of the 9900, 720p and again watching a few vids people have uploaded...it doesnt look too bad, about as same as my iphone4 which also does 720p recording.

Cheers Robbo for the comparison shots.

While it will still vary in different conditions, I'd say that overall those pictures seem to be a fairly accurate representation of the various cameras.

Also, remember that everyone considers the Nokia N8 to be the be all and end all of mobile phone cameras, so you generally won't get a better shot than that.

Bear in mind though with image adjustments you could probably increase the gap in quality, but the 9900 has software based images adjustments (as it's EDoF) and they make quite a difference too.

Also, yes! The 720p is surprisingly good, as is the image stabilisation feature! It looks absolutely 100% crisp on the phone screen itself, and not bad when uploaded either.

Thanks for the pics Robbo :)

The N8 is definately better, the text on the top of the cans is much easier to read, the colours on the 9900 look more realistic than the Apples though, could be just my old eyes?

I ordered the 9900 on Friday via Vodafone direct, got the 12month deal @ £51 per month, (1200mins, U/L texts, 750MB data, BIS, 2GB WiFi p/m) so thats £612 + £59 for the handset = £671, then I got £90.90 cashback, so £580.10 over 12 months, and as I was going to pay £515 outright for the sim free option, its only costing me £5.43 a month for all those minutes & data etc..... not bad me thinks!

Anyway, I can't wait to get it now, hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday! :)

The iPhone 4 does have a habit of ramping up the contrast on images, the colours of the 9900 are more realistic certainly.

Shut up shut up shut up :)

Stop showing off. One day, in the not too distant future, Orange may release the phone for there customers.

I find it unprofessional that they have not got it sorted in line with other networks and managed to release it.

What does Orange do that the other networks, ie: Vodaphone and O2 do that seems to be causing them problems.

I see from Crackberry that none of the current OSes released or leaked have UMA support, so it makes me wonder wether Orange don't want to release it until BB updates that side of things?

PS. I'll let you know how much I enjoy using it in the next few days, hee hee :D

Not entirely sure this phone will ever see UMA to be honest (although it is a much desired feature for office contracts we sell as we offer UMA inter-office calls for free - goodbye desk phones. This happens for non-uma as well in case you ever wondered but it's not as fun). It's true, its about 3 weeks away on Orange and it does truly suck for all involved, sorry :(

I went into the dark side today (02 shop) and had a play on the 9900. Must admit. I did enjoy it. Screen and keyboard is lovely. Was easy to navigate.

Loving the touch screen.
Can't wait till Orange get it. Seems a nicer keyboard than my present 8900
