Blackberry Playbook....

the fact that you haven't but instantly attacked me says it all about you...
I did what now?

that all you are is a lowly phone tester for some network out in Belgium unless im mistaken??
Oh you mean like that?

Oooh a rolleyes such an adult way of debating or having a discussion...
Sorry, I'll "debate" your way using ;) instead then.

its no wonder i read your comments and think to myself what a load cobbler you spout off.
Feel free to ignore me. If you don't, tell me what exactly did I say which is not true?

Grow up and come back when you have something more informative to post:).
You mean like your brothers informative "rumors"? :p

Do you even read your own posts?

Chill Spawn, you just look a little upset that someone else has the inside scoop.

What inside scoop would that be? I hope you are not referring to "...this thing is going to truly rock..."

Wow, this thread is full of more fanboys than the iPad one. And we get a bad name!?

Now, which emoticon am I allowed to use again?

:p

I've put up a rather rambly post over here should anyone wish to read my more thorough thoughts.

I keep saying this, but I'm intrigued by the thing. Battery life is obviously a concern with the CPU the thing's sporting, plus it's obviously smaller than the iPad meaning probably smaller battery. Still, does it NEED to last as long as the iPad? I tend to charge mine every night regardless.

I know people will assume I'm going to be pro-iPad no matter what, but this thing has indeed piqued my interest.

And I'll say it again - competition is good for everyone.

Read your review on there and there's two things I would disagree with here:

3rd on my list (yes, it’s more than a couple!) is the 1080p video recording provided by one of the two (count ‘em) cameras. You don’t need that kind of multimedia capability for a business tablet...

Telepresence/Teleconference? This is becoming quite a big deal, especially where I work. This tablet is perfect for that when someone is unable to be at a designated office for a teleconference!

Well, I think competition is good*. The better the competition, the better the next iPad. The better the next iPad, the better the competition and so on.

Has Apple really faced competition? Think of the iPhone when it was first released... 2G, then 3G, then multiprocessing and then... "FaceTime". They were quite slow to bring on these features when they were already present in a lot of smart phones. I don't think all these companies bringing out tablets whether running Windows/Android/WebOS (HP) are going to be an issue for Apple... they'll add features to their device whenever they feel like it and still get people herding into their stores for it.

It's not really a review as obviously I've not had a play with one, but I'm nit-picking ;)

The video-conferencing thing - Perhaps I didn't put it across correctly. I expect the cameras, for the same reasons you give - I'd expect any tablet to come out from here on in to sport two cameras (we all know the next iPad for example's going to have FaceTime - whether anyone uses it or not!). My main confusion comes from the spec. The guy from BlackBerry (Lazaridis I believe) said in his keynote that both cameras were capable of 1080p. That just seems overkill for a bit of video-conferencing which leads me to believe this isn't going to be JUST a corporate device like they're initially trying to market it.

I'm still not sure I'm getting it across right, but there you go :D

As for Apple not being given competition and not adding features. Apple tend to hold stuff back knowing full well they're going to need a new whiz-bang feature for next year, so yeah I agree with you to that extent. If all other smartphones didn't do multitasking though we wouldn't have it on the iPhone. It's competition in action.

Again, might not be explaining it well - not had enough coffee thus far!

:p It's 17:50 man - you don't need coffee at this time of day!!

Wonder if they'll keep the A4 for another year? I.e. clock it to ~1.3Ghz and boost ram to 512mb+ or go straight for a duel core cortex A9?

Well it will be interesting to see what apple come up with in the next gen of ipad...if the specs on the BB tablet are to be believed...i dont doubt for a second they are fake as they have running prototypes at the Devcon in SF...then apple will really have to up the game so to speak what with Android makin their own tabs and now Blackberry entering the market...its going to be hard to pick which one...the ipad does ooze quality and im just hoping the BB tablet oozes it too...ill be disappointed if its all plastic.

I reckon apple will put a 1ghz cpu along with 1gb RAM at least in the next ipad...maybe a camera or 2.

Some more info on the QNX OS which will be running the blackberry tablet: http://devblog.blackberry.com/2010/09/blackberry-tablet-os/

The current iPad's A4 is supposedly 1GHz at the moment, but I'd assume the next one will be dual-core. RAM obviously needs upping too, but the two cameras are a given.

Just watched the keynote again. Lasaridis is no Jobs but I must admit he did a good job on-stage. It all felt very polished.

Not keen on the name... it's too American Football!

If RIM was English it'd be called the Blackberry whiteboard :p (maybe blackboard is more fitting :D)

The iPad getting a duel core SoC and 1GB of ram would mean a big change for iOS no? Full multitasking, wider hardware acceleration etc... otherwise there'd be little point in those specs?

Not wanting to go too far off-topic, but I don't think it'd mean a change in the way they multitask. Not unless they could make the battery the size of suitcase :)

Introducing the new iSuitcase? :p

Battery life will be really interesting on the playbook, how long can it play a 1080p movie on your TV while checking your emails/browsing the web on the tablet screen? Not long I guess... :D

This Playbook does look an impressive bit of kit, for someone who will be carrying it around, i think that 7" screen is just right, but for someone who will just use it around the house, they may want something a bit bigger such as a 9" screen. It will be cool if RIM releases a 7" version and a 9" version.

Hey Spawn, i remember a while a go you said that you got hold of the Blackberry 9800 torch to play around with, what do you think of it now? I don't know whether to get it when it comes out or wait for the new Blackberry Bold 9780 phone.

Specifications are good, but that means nothing. If the OS is unintuitive and poor, then it won't be a good device in my eyes.

Yep id have to agree....7" is about right for carrying around but thinking about it...if im using it around the house etc then a bigger screen would be better but it will be interesting to see what the battery life is like...im hoping its rather good like the BB devices...rock solid battery life.

Yep i had a pre dev 9800 that my brother had back in Aug when he was visiting me from Canada...its quite good but im not a fan of slider phones in general but for me it was the OS6 that was i interested in more and i was suitably impressed/blown away by it...RIM definitely stepped it up and using OS6 as a base, the OS can only get better....im just waiting on my 9700 to get OS6....hopefully soon there will be a version for the 9700.

As for getting it??...id probably say wait till its out on the networks..supposed this week but its been delayed so prob mid oct i imagine...but id definitely go and have a play with one if you can find a demo model...its good no doubt but has its quirks etc...personally id wait for the 9780 if your not into touch screens as the 9800 uses both touch and a hardware keyboard.

I spent an hour or so with a Torch last month. I was pleasantly surprised by it, but I've no real Blackberry experience as a reference.
