Oh, you mean the "xth" MMO that's going to make a dent in WoW's monolithic market share, just like the others?

I bought UnReal Tournament almost 10 years ago for £14.99

I play that even today and I still occasionally go online and get my arse kicked - I love it and I dont pay a penny to play it online or off

you still have not answered the question of why you are paying almost a tenner a month to play one game when I, and millions of others play dozens of games online and dont pay a penny and never have.

I must be missing something.

I mean, thats why Demos are freely available... You try a demo and if you like it, you buy the full game. One off payment, job done. You play online or you dont play online, easy as pie, and if you bought the game and you dont like it, thats not a problem you sell the game off and recover some of your money and you move on to the next.

But you lot are paying £8.99 a month? - how many months have you done this for?

In the 10 years of playing just that one game, I have paid out a total of less than £15 and that was for the initial purchase of it.. Not once have I paid out a penny for playign it online.

You really cannot justify paying out in any way that I can accept!!!

Im sorry, but you just cant.

Why are you so concerned about what other people are paying for computer games?

Having done the MMO thing myself years ago (and I'll never let myself fall into that trap again), MMOs offer a very different experience to playing FPS games online. Persistant world, characters and the ability to play with huge amounts of players at once. If you enjoy this sort of thing, your only option is generally a subscription-based game (aside from a few alternatives, but they mostly suck).

I couldn't justify the outlay now but at the time it was enjoyable and it's not like £10/month is going to break the bank - especially if it means you don't end up buying any other games that month.

People who buy games such as UT and COD4 then play on servers, servers that are usually paid for by themselves or other players. If everyone just spent that one-ff payment then you would little or no servers to play on!

As for MMORPGs, I currently have an inactive WoW account (didn't really enjoy it) and 2 inactive Eve accounts (taking a break).

With Eve, you buy the game and then you pay for access to the servers, this also includes all future updates and patches. I know with WoW you had to buy the BC expansion which I thought rather tight considering the £'s they make through subs.

It is very simple to understand, can't see why you have a problem with it!

EDIT: I would also like to point out that you can get eve GTC for £6-7 for 30 days of game time. Round here I would struggle to find 3 pint of beer for less than £6, plus, my eve sub will last a lot longer than 3 pints :D

I know what they can do, and I am also fully aware of the trap they can be, and how much money they make on these things.. Esp WoW.

Bt, I suppose you are right... If they want to do that sort of thing, why should I care?

I just dont like to see people get ripped off in such a way that they truly believe that they are not and then they defend the people who are ripping them off because they truly, truly believe that they are not being ripped off, when the rest of the world can see it clear as day.

Anyone see the WOW Episode of SouthPark?

I don't get why people insist on spamming every WoW thread, if you don't like the game, just don't read - it's that simple.

Thanks for the heads up Teki, one of my friends was trying to make a new account last night and couldn't figure out why it wasn't accepting his payment, will let him know he has to call up.

neoboy - the money didn't end up at the hotel, it just came up as that on statements because of an error at Streamline.

never played an mmo before have you?
they arent cheap to maintain, devs are constantly working on the, GM's get paid , tech support get paid, mods and admins generally get paid.
bandwidth isnt free and neither are server clusters many of them need

The EVE Online supercomputer cluster manages over 150 million database transactions per day on a 64-bit hardware architecture from IBM. The database servers don't use traditional hard drives but instead Solid State Disks (SSD) which are recognize as the worlds fastest storage devices with over 400,000 random I/Os per second.
yea i can see how they can provide that for free  (eve-online uses the most powerful super computer in the gaming industry though)

blizzard are cheap though with the profits they make each year the expansions should be free aswell as the initial game

Accepted and Im sorry.

Its not like I dont like the game because its a game that I know I would love to bits but Im just not willing to cough up the money. I used to play D&D AD&D MERP, and WH40K in uni and the games lasted yonks, so its certainly a game that Id love to do.

Its just the whole idea of paying to go online when there are many other options available ..

Or is there?

These are afterall, just one massive game, when such things as BF2, COD3 etc are constantly playing lots of little games.

never played an mmo before have you?

That obvious is it? LOL

Im seeing now why the subscriptions are needed.

Pardon my ignorance, but if you dont know, you dont know.

I certainly wouldn't pay a monthly charge to play a on line game. Why not create your own server? Oh wait blizzard don't like that.

Because private servers aren't as good and often lack functionality.

Good luck hosting a WoW server on Virgin Media or so too.

As stated, on the whole they are rather bad.

Usually using bog standard hardware with low bandwidth means lots of lag and few players. Usually, they have lots of high level players which makes being a noob a pita!

I have tried a free WoW server, having to keep 2 WoW installs going at different patch levels etc really isn't worth the effort.

The only game so far that has been successful in creating free servers was UO!s

If people want to pay it then let them

Its the good old arguement of why do this when you can do that.

Lol, could that video get more fanboyed? I'm not going to get into a big debate about why WoW is better, because it is.

Anyway I'm pretty sure about 6 months ago everyone was saying War is crap and wont do well at all.

But hey, i don't pay any attention to WAR, it just looks sounds and feels crap.

Steal wow's pve!! lol.

Deticated Gigabit octa core xeons > Blizzard rip off :).

Seriously though it's lame they don't offer decent dedicated server support, if they'd allow people to hire their own gigabit servers with good hardware,, nobody would pay blizzard any more...

Anyways pay to play online will always be fail in my eyes, luckily Microsoft just accepted that too and made windows live gold free for everyone...

I think a "Blizzard" online account will be far better, you just pay £10 a month and that covers all games from that studio. Or maybe a group could be setup, as a third party which you then pay a fixed amount and allows you complete online play from any game/studio? After all you can only play one computer at a time..

£10/month for each and every online/MMOG could end up expensive..

:confused::confused::confused:

Blizzard servers are decent ty very much, also I'd rather pay a bit to Blizzard as they actually design the game than pay a third party for a server.

As said private servers aren't functional in every way, I don't just mean lag wise some encounters/instances don't work correctly among other things.

Shouldn't WOW be free to download? Once you start paying the subscription it would have paid for the game many times over.

It's not like WOW has a off line mode.
