Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

umm, I just tried maxing out my 4 meg connection..

using DUmeter to monitor..

494.1 kB/sec DL 9.0kB/sec UL

so 2.5 X that for 10 meg would give under 25 up

dont see a problem
Thanks for that. Out of interest is that with default Windows TCP/IP settings or have you tweaked the RWIN or MTU?

When my line is upgraded I shall make a point of testing all of this out to see exactly what the upstream usage is as a result of downloading and whether I can upload at the same time or not. No great loss if not but I suspect there will be bandwidth to spare.

4x faster download and 3x faster upload well I'm well happy. :D

I was also one of the guinea pigs for one night and the extra speed was amazing I cannot wait now. :)

They may not be the fastest or cheapest but they sure are reliable.

So pointing out when someone is consistently talking rubbish is childish trolling? I'm guilty then.

How am i talking rubbish ? im stating facts about when you download it takes your upload! i think its you who has no idea what your talking about son. now go make yourself a cup of tea and have a sit down with a nice informative book.

You can stop bluffing now dude.

Yes, downloading uses some upload but downloading at 10Mbit is not going to swamp a 384Kbps (48KBps) upload like you keep on claiming.

I don’t pretend to know anything about networking or internet connections but my 1meg blueyonder connection when maxed out downloading from the news groups uses about 3k/sec up. So would I be wrong in thinking a connection 10 times faster down would use ten times the up speed to download?? Which would make 30s/sec, so on a 348 upload would leave about 15ish k/sec upload for browsing the web ect. My blueyonder 1 meg connection only has about a 128 (15k/sec) upload at the moment and it seems fine to me for just browsing the web and stuff.

edit - sorry kev didnt see ** post.

Back to topic. the 10 down is definatly a good thing, and so is the price drop, im glad to see pricing aswell as speeds are getting competitive.

Also is there an actual limit on the tech of blueyonder fibres? if they wanted what sort of speeds could they do? i have read eslewhere there is a technical upload limit on there lines, but as they have said they can goto 50 meg on the down.

It is true that if you max out your upload pipe whilst doing a big download, requests for traffic to be sent down don't get through and so your download speed suffers. However, this can be delt with something that's Quality of Sevice (QoS) aware. Good routers can do it, a linux box doing firewall/routing tasks, or you can even buy boxes you put between the cable modem and the router.

They are generally marketted for VoIP type stuff (as your phonecall could stuffer if you were uploading/P2P'ing something), but it works for all traffic and improves load balancing.

My Linksys WRT54g router has Sveasoft software on it to do the task, many Linux distros can do it and there's this broadband booster.

Every now and again more upload speed would be nice and ADSL is generally better for this, but BY has been very robust for me in the last 5 years and I've no intension of moving.

Seems a bit strange that everyone is whingeing about a free (and maybe a price cut!) upgrade, is it just people that cant get Blueyonder who are complaining?

The upload is a valid point but it isnt like you're always gonna max out a 10Mbit connection on P2P anyway!

Personally the willy waving factor along is awesome ;)

I am only stating what I have experienced, I do admit that this is with p2p so with the multitude of tcp/ip links being used I surpose you will be sending more ack req than if you were downloading off a single IP.

I do still stand by the fact that it is a very poor upload speed considering the download speed.

I like hosting coop games and that upload would suck for me, maybe not everyone else but it would for me.

As for being bitter I get that upload with my 3mb NTL (almost) and when I get the 10mbit I should have 1mbit up. Again some people are moaning about the 75gig a month cap but again for me that is more than enough.

I do laugh about how personnelly people take things on these boards, take a chill pill all and have a group hug.

It would be boring if we all agree and I am the first to put my hands up to something when I am proved to be talkin crap :)

Aye - having been one of the guinea pigs for the 10 mbit trial on BY, all I can say is this will be immense!

Just as I was about to leave TW BY, they give me something to look forward to. Well played!
If you were a guinea pig for the 10Mb test this means that the Head End where the signal is sent from will have already been upgraded in that area to support the new speeds so I'd expect everyone from September connected to it to get the speed increase.

I don't see how this is a bad thing. I'm on the 1MB service, dropped down just the other month. Now I have the option of upgrading again, an extra tenner a month for what sounds a pretty sweet service. If I don't need the speed, I can 'downgrade' and get twice the download & upload speeds, or stay put and sample the nice 4MB service. A faster upload would be nice, but I'm pretty happy with BYs announcement. Well done guys:)

Looks like I might have to do a u-turn and back down from that snotty email I sent BY saying I would be canceling my services at the end of the year:p
