BMW and M Power Owners

Thanks dudes. I think the white is the mineral metallic, looks lovely. Might change my mind when it's filthy and covered in tar spots!

Not sure what colour the leather is though - it's not the darker brown (cocoa?) nor the very light beige colour - it appears to be 'one in the middle'. Does anyone know what it might be? (I'll try and get a picture when I pick the car up)

Thanks Gaygle and Fox for the sage advice. What's the chance of this happening to both my BMWs over the same 3 days?! The same warning has just popped up on the 330 too, will wait til the engine cools and check the level. I suppose it's possible it was topped up without sufficient ratio of water to antifreeze (both cars went in for service around the same time last year although not sure if coolant was done then as one was engine oil change the other was brakes and fluid) and could have frozen in there... It's not been below freezing here for the last 2 years so I suppose it's possible with it being -4*C overnight but I wouldn't have expected a BMW service centre to make that mistake. Time to book them both in!

Have both recently had a service and coolant swap? possible - although very unlikely - that both have just been filled with water, that said, I'd have thought it would take more than -4 to do any serious damage.

I had a burst pipe on a truck years back, ran it for a week with just water in it, it was down to -8 overnight too, just kept topping it up when the warning light came on, got it back to the depot on Friday and the company mechanic fixed it (The days before Stobart where roadside call outs were avoided due to cost! - false economy by a small operator...)

As I say, its VERY unlikely, more like sods law is just picking on you!

Girl in work today banging on about her bf buying a 14 plate 1 series diesel with 4.5k miles on the clock.. Surely that can't be a good thing?
It's not. A guy I work constantly goes on about how his girlfriend has got (it's on PCP) a brand new "1 series m sport". In reality, it's a 118d.

He think it's so great, I just don't understand. And the guy's in his late thirties...

yup lots of people do, which is why they're so popular.. :o all show no go springs to mind ;)

That’s typical UK car buying mentality for the average Joe for you. They don’t know cars, but they know BMW and Sport, so it must mean POWER.

A relative recently bought an E220 CDi AMG Sport saloon, and made sure to point out that it was an AMG, and that it had more power because of it. I’m thinking to myself “dude, what…”.

Ah well.

At least 5hp from each badge :p

I personally think there's actually some snobbery from us petrolheads when it comes to these things. If people are happy with their 118d M Sport or E220 AMG then so be it? They both look good in that spec so I'm unsure what's the problem. Most people on this thread don't drive M5's or M3's etc - but there's a large number of diesel M Sport drivers in here. Just because people can't afford or justify a true M Car doesn't mean they should have to drive around in SE spec or whatever the Mercedes equivalent is :s

And judging by the way some people drive now, they can just able handle the power in their automatic, turbo 118d and 220 etc engines as I seem to be constantly tailgated these days by such drivers :p

What I do believe is that there should be more of a marked differentiation between real M cars and M Sport variants. As the latter look so mean and aggressive that I'd be bit miffed that the 318d next to me looks almost identical to my 50k M4.

Younger brother in law was recently looking for a car, he was searching auto trader for everything with 'Sport' in the name until I pointed it out in most cases it's just a stick on badge :p

I'm not surprised there's so much confusion or lack of knowledge by the general population - that's exactly what car makers wanted to do is sell cars by sticking on fancy badges.

Luckily for you, that 318d M Sport really doesn't look much like an M4, so it's not really an issue.

Yes, people are free to drive what they like, and as long as they are happy, it's all good. It's the presumption that AMG Line or M-Sport is anything more than a trim level which is most annoying. No, it is not quicker, it has different springs and bumpers...

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having an M Sport diesel, or AMG Sport, or whatever else does a Sport variety in standard engine format. It's the owners themselves who go around claiming they're sports cars with lots of power because of them.

agreed.. that's the bit that bothers me

guess that's why we see so many "M" cars ;)

:o

Ok, 420d...

so it's not really an issue.

Calm down, dear :p

Personally never come across anyone (in real life) who goes around claiming as such. But it's just one of those things, not unique to cars, it's like the cousin everyone has who works in IT Support and tells everyone's he's a hot shot consultant. What ya gonna do :p

Took both cars with the coolant warning on into the BMW service. Service guy took them away checked for visible signs of leaks in the "usual places" (15 mins) and then topped them up with more coolant - said if either does it again bring it in and they'll take a more thorough look, but for now no problem they were just a bit below minimum.

He said the cold weather could contribute as the engine runs hotter at startup to compensate (?) so needs to use more coolant...
