BMW and M Power Owners

After much deliberating on life after a 640d.... two days of sun led me to an S5 Cab (2012), or an F33.... we have a winner....

435i, Tanzanite Blue, BMW Individual Opal White leather, Harmon Kardon, Comfort Access, Go, Heating Pack (air scarf, wheel), 2014, 26k on the clock. Service pack and warranty till 2019.

Niiice, how is the air scarf?

Call me a *****, but I wouldn't be replacing either of those rear tyres either. I'd be getting it properly aligned, setting the pressures correctly and then keeping an eye on the inside edges. With the alignment set properly they'll wear away a lot slower than they have been.

Well I measured my tread depth this weekend using one of those Halfords electronic doo daas and the shallowest I found (having checked multiple places on the rear tyres was 2.9mm, so I'm not sure how BMW measured it differently to come up with 2mm and 1.6mm... Across the middle of the tyre there is plenty of depth left.

I'm assuming they wanted to flog you some tyres, as well as some brakes, which is why I recommended getting another garage to check the brakes. In my experience, you simply can't trust a garage (much more so a main dealer or a national chain) when they recommend brakes and tyres and I would always check them myself to make sure.

Pretty much every illegal tyre I see is due to wear on the inside edge of the tyre to the extent that it is showing cords, when the centre 75% can be still ok. If it has worn slightly more around the inside edge of the tyre, and assuming it's not significant wear and bald - it's something to be aware of and check very regularly.

The requirement is to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre, which it easily does (4-5mm in the places I checked), it's only towards the outer areas where it is less, but still above that limit. Pretty cheeky for a main dealer to be doing that.

Lol the AA says - Generally, you should expect front tyres to last for about 20,000 miles while rear tyres get longer use at about 40,000 miles  Does anyone achieve that?!

Fun and games negotiating with dealers. First they've categorically said twice last week they are unable to extended the AUC warranty to 2 years due to how the warranty system works. But just this morning when mentioning adding some money towards it they can suddenly do it? I guess either my haggling skills isn't that good or they're not getting much profit on deal.

Anyways, I've been quoted £360 for the additional year's warranty which is surprising cheap and a bit of a no brainer. It's over double this on the BMW warranty website.

Right, I think I'm upset. The new F90 / G30 M5 will have an tweaked version of the 8Spd ZF auto (Wet Clutch). No DCT.....really? Is that because it's likely to be AWD/RWD on demand?

Probably because slush-boxes are so damn good now there's no need to go DCT for anything other than weight saving or compact size. Look at the new 10-speed coming out of Ford. Gear changes are supposedly quicker than the best DCT items.

So I'm thinking about a X3 X-drive 2.0D. I want a nice comfy SUV...

I'm new to the BMW world...

I've got one, it's a nice car and comfortable interior, decent amount of space without feeling overly large to drive, good driving position. If I was getting one again I'd probably get one with the m-suspension deletion or adaptive suspension to give a softer ride, definitely xenons (I wasn't bothered at first but after 18mths I'm totally converted, wouldn't get a car without them now), and a tow bar (for easy bike rack fitting). The throttle response of the 2.0D is a bit slow (and sounds like a tractor) but it doesn't feel underpowered.

I give up having nice cars :( I have no luck with them

Diff needs replacing. I complained about an ever so slight humming noise at between 50-60mph, took a technician out today for a drive and as soon as he heard it he went "Yeah you need a new diff", did a couple of other quick tests to check if it would produce noises he was expecting and it did

9k and a new diff....u wot m8?!

Thank god for warranties

Yikes! Isn't your car less than a year old? What happened that it requires a new diff?

You've just had the exact reverse of the problem people have with main dealers! Normally *you're* trying to convince them there is a problem and you have to take it back twenty times with the same problem before anything happens. However in this occasion a technician has sat in the vehicle for a few minutes and diagnosed that the entire differential needs to be replaced?!

Fair enough - it's them that's paying. Bet it won't be the diff in the end :p

It's 9 months old :(

But to be fair, it's not completely out the blue. I obviously had the accident (lost it on ice and slid sideways in to a kerb) at Christmas which meant the suspension needed to be replaced at the back and front passenger sides.

He thinks something has been pushed in to the diff which is causing the rubbing/humming sounds. I thought it might be a wheel bearing but he's pretty sure it's not based on the type of noise

And Gaygle, I know that experience only too well. Took my car in to Jaguar 10 times trying to get them to find the cause of a noise in my car, they still couldn't. Hence why I have the BMW now :p
