BMW and M Power Owners

A service is never just a service is it  BMW tell me I need new front discs too (although the pads are only 55% worn the discs themselves are below recommended min). So £450 brake discs and pads, £150 oil service (expected) plus whatever I spend on tyres, this is going to be an expensive car ownership month  Lucky they included a free vehicle check  The glove box catch is broken too (stuck in locked position) but at £200 to fix I can live without a glove box for a while...

Weren't you definitely replacing the car by September? What I've learned is that when a BMW main dealer say things are "recommended" to be replaced - it really means they're about half worn. If you're not able to tell if your discs are worn yourself, I would take it to a local garage for a second opinion. Unless they're really bad, I would suggest that they can wait a few months for them to be the problem of the next owner - saving you £450.

If you absolutely do need discs - why take it to a main dealer? Brembo discs and pads are £196 from EuroCarParts and fitting should be....£60-70? A saving of £200 - or a nice weekend away somewhere!? :p

Yeah, was on about the warranty beyond the the one that comes with a AUC. So it is possible then?

Yes, you can here: https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk.

Hope to sell it by September (earliest) but that depends on a couple things going right... Second opinion is a good shout, the BMW report says, in the "red-urgent" section:
55% Worn Front Brake Discs and Pads Required - Discs are worn well below min recommended thickness
rear left tyre needs replacing: 2mm inner tread depth, 5mm middle tread depth, 4mm outer tread depth
rear right tyre needs replacing: 1.6mm inner tread depth, 4mm middle tread depth, 2.5mm outer tread depth
Wouldn't I need genuine BMW parts to maintain the extended warranty? Glovebox they'll do under warranty but I pay £100 excess, maybe they could throw that in FOC. Could poor alignment cause that kind of tyre wear or under inflation?

Reads like both alignment and over inflation to me.

Yes it's trivially easy for a dealer to do this but some don't seem to realise so might claim they can't do it.

Thanks. I'm sure I've read people negotiate this at the dealers, but might have been for brand new cars. I'll call them up tomorrow and ask them again.

That's if I purchase it myself. I was looking to get the extra year warranty added as part of the deal.

Call me a *****, but I wouldn't be replacing either of those rear tyres either. I'd be getting it properly aligned, setting the pressures correctly and then keeping an eye on the inside edges. With the alignment set properly they'll wear away a lot slower than they have been.

Should I get the deeper dished carbon rear boot spoiler which will nicely match my carbon wing mirror covers or stay with the standard orange unit.

Grudas how big of a difference has going from 19" to 18" in terms of ride quality and comfort on your Z4? I'm currently on 19" CSL's from CM wheels which they do look gorgeous on the car, My wallet and spine could do with less of a pounding :(

Hoping to see a big difference with going from Front 225/35/19 Rear 265/30/19 to whatever size MV2's are.

Huge! The car has stiff suspension as is, never mind with 19s and thin rubber rings around them. It is less bouncy, doesn't feel as sketchy on the road and just handles and feels a million times better. As much as i like the look on 19s i will not go back to them. 18s with good fitment and more sidewall look and drive much better in my opinion.

That's great to know, The car came with them when I bought it late 2015, the plan was whatever Z4 I bought was to put MV2 on it as I find they suit the car.

Cheers for that mate.

Engines gone pop in the 730d :( they quoting 5.5k for a 0 mile recon replacement.

I don't know whether to pay up or just scrap the car. If I pay the 5.5k then how much do you think I'd be able to sell the car on for?

An 11 year old 7 with 0 miles on a new engine. It's got all the toys: comfort access, soft close doors, TV, front and rear heated seats... but will it be worth much more than the 5.5k spent to bring it back to life?

I honestly have no idea what to do.

Ive been planning on buying a new car soon but I'm still waiting for them to come down to a reasonable price. And now with a baby on the way I don't want to just **** away cash.

Any advice? :(

A quick look on AT has 05 and 06 reg 730d's roughly between £4K and £11k, at best I'd guess yours in good running order is worth £6k ish so perhaps just spend the money on a replacement car rather than just a recon engine that's costing nigh the cars value...

No guarantee of course that the replacement car won't go pop itself where I imagine the recon will have some kind of warranty....

I've never had good experience with engine swaps in cars though, they either never feel the same or just go bang after a few months as well.....

If you were going to sell it anyway, and it's not going to be worth any/much more than the cost of the replacement engine then just sell it now. Probably would put it on ebay or something in the hope you get a chunk of cash back and use the money you would've spent on repairs towards the next car.
