What about via the bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk site? You'll have to link your car via VIN to your account to be able to do it.
If I try and login it tells me I already have a BMW account elsewhere (I do, the My BMW one) and I can't register as it tells me to log in using my existing credentials. I'll get the VIN at lunchtime and try to enter that into My BMW and see if that makes a difference.

Been looking into E65 7 series as I would like a nice comfy barge. Apart from oil leaks and burning oil on petrol engines and dodgy turbos on diesels, what else do I need to look out for? I've also been told to check for a good service history, specifically oil changes, whilst also checking suspension.

What else am I missing?

Managed to register the car in ConnectedDrive however the security code it's sending to the car never appears. So I rang BMW and it was still registered with the previous owner, they said they have now removed that and to try again but the same issue. Looks like I'll have to ring them again on my way home or some point this afternoon.

Water leaks on the V8s are an engine strip job. PCV can fail and is a pig of a job as it's right at the back of the engine. Hunting while idle is a symptom. Mechatronics issues with the gearbox are fairly common.
Lots of software gremlins that should have all been sorted by now if they car has a full BMW SH.
They are pretty solid cars. I've had two of them (a 2007 730d and a 2006 750i) but was running them when they were still relatively new. Get a post 2005 facelift if you can. It has a much better iDrive system and softened styling. Post 2006 is even better still because they added the aux input for the hifi. Try to get one with the Logic 7 audio as the stock hifi is complete junk.
If everything works, it has a FSH from BMW or a good specialist, and the price is right then they can be a good buy.

Thanks very much for the advice. The one I'm looking at is a late 2006 750i with all the works. Been to see it and it's a lovely car and everything appears to work as it should, yet no substitute for caution. It's good full BMW service history and no major issues so might be worth a punt.

Get the engine checked out by a specialist before you buy. There is a bodge fix for the V8s for the water pipe that fails that some people do to move the car on. The only permanent fix is a complete engine strip and rebuild.

Starting to get frustrated with BMW and getting ConnectedDrive to work. I ring up, they ask me a set of questions, walk me through updating the system then tell me to try in a few hours and if it doesn't work to call again.

So I call again and go through the same thing again. Three times now!

I had some issues as well. I eventually got my car allocated on my account and paid for the services and the car updated itself. Until I had paid I had no visibility of the connected drive options other than an option which showed a phone number.

Finally after the 4th phone call they have told me that the car is still registered to the previous owner on their system. I have to send them a copy of my V5 and they will manually assign the car to me. Why that took 4 phone calls is beyond me.

That's the issue, I can't even pay for anything, all I can do at https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk is confirm the security code which has been sent to my car, but there's no code, there isn't even a messages section within ConnectedDrive.

There is a form you can send to BMW

Email [email protected] or call 0800 325 6000 and they will send you the form. you need to send them the form along with a copy of the V5c. Once received they will add the vehicle to your account at which point you can book the services online and they will appear in your iDrive options.
