BMW and M Power Owners

My search for my unicorn e38 hath ended, I've just put a £1k deposit on this (without seeing it and having a £6k offer rejected) at asking price.

1 owner from new 32 visit documented full BMW service history, just shy of 56k miles.

It's even got a heated steering wheel (after my derision of them in another thread!)

I'm sure some will think I'm mad, but,it's the right car for me, what I've hankered after the right one for years, this is it.

I'm going to view it when I return from my current holiday in Cyprus.

Ummmmmm

How can it be more comprehensive than the BMW approved used warranty? It covers virtually the entire car.

It's much cheaper than the BMW offering 800 quid is at least half the price of the BMW equivalent but I'd want to see some documentation first..

Yeap, will go through documentation and compare both. Quote "it will cover the entire value of the car, so if the engine went - which costs £12k to replace, that will be replaced and taken out of the pot the car is worth".

Will update once I see the contract.

That is a lot of money for a non ideal spec E38. Its not even a 740i....
Indeed I quite agree, however it's £6.5k for a one owner, wanted for nothing e38 with sub 60k miles.
I've looked looked and looked and this is,by a country mile, the best out there by a long way, yes, it's not a 740,nor an unaffordable 750 but,it's not another 728 and I'm happy with its undoubtedly great condition.

Time will tell....

I'll be honest and say if this is what it wanted for a long time then get it! Good condition ones will only go up in value and bad condition ones are to be avoided for obvious reasons. They're old so small issues are expected. Get it and enjoy it!

This is it : link (pdf)
Alternately google Inchcape warranty.

Seems equivalent to the BMW approved. Unless I've missed some detail. Includes MOT test cover.
I believe the only difference is that if your car breaks down away from home and they cannot fix at roadside they will take to closest Inchcape garage and pay up to £75 towards hotel fees/travel (last page). Also gives you 7 days car hire.

So I'm not a fan of diesel cars but I'm surprised how nice the engine is and actually it's probably a better all round car than the m6.

I disagree. It's not a rare, extremely desirable poster car. Look at the values of E32s if you want a guide. Most sit at the £500 mark with only the 750is commanding good money. With cars such as this, it's only the top spec ones with the top engine that become desirable as they age.
Much as I love the E38, and much as I know how he loves them too, I would not be dropping £6.5k on one no matter what the condition. Then again, if he's plannning on keeping it for a decade or more then I can see the logic to a point.

Completely disagree with this, when discussing that specific car. While i can accept that it is probably in great condition, the reality is that it is a 735i. This is one of the least desirable engine options, and it is non sport model in an undesirable gold colour. Its resale will be absolutely minimal in the future in my opinion, it is just not worth much given what it is. The dealer selling it are trying their luck, as with their other (very ordinary) yet extremely highly priced stock.

Well my 645ci is having a pure nightmare now with the garage it went to for work. Nearly 3 weeks ago the garage took it in for a rocker cover gasket and new cover as the cylinder 5-8 one was cracked, causing an oil leak and poor performance plus rough idle. The mechanic took ages to get the parts, decided to go on holiday when he found out I was away for 8 days, now he's cracked two rocker covers he's tried to fit and now the car is throwing a camshaft sensor error fault.

He tried to give the car back to me last week with the camshaft error and a huge oil leak which I went mental about as it's completely undrivable and a serious fire risk. He picked it up again, by truck this time, on Monday morning and promised me it would be fixed. Roll on Friday afternoon after I just come out of having day surgery and I get the phone call that he can't fix the camshaft sensor fault and that he's passing it over to another garage to get them to check it.

He told me the name of the garage and that it's all sorted, so I phoned them and they have no record of any of it. I also asked them when they could see the car and they said not for 2 weeks. Obviously phoned the mechanic and went mental. He's now telling me that his friend works there and he'll sort it. I found this guy through clickmechanic website and I've escalated it with them. I've paid nearly £500 out for this work to be done and in a timely manner, yet all I've had so far is excuses, poor workmanship and a car that's in a worse state now than it was when he first collected it!

That sounds like really bad luck, but how come you have paid them if they have not fixed the car?

Payment is agreed in advance through the website so you don't end up being massively overcharged, a safety net basically. Is diagnosed what was wrong with the car myself, meaning I could quote the work up myself. The fact it's gone through the website gives me some comfort as it's covered by them. I've escalated it but they won't be open to phone them until Tuesday it seems due to the bank holiday.

Edit, plus I was charged when he said he'd fixed it, yet this is when I returned from holiday to a car that shook on idle and smoke came from the engine bay...

Read the edit...

I couldn't leave the car with my usual garage as they don't have anywhere to put the car whilst I was abroad for 8 days. I had to be fixed by the time I came back due to various issues, hospital treatment being one of them.
I know this is of little help now, but in my opinion, if you insist on running old cars (as i do!) you MUST MUST MUST either do the work yourself, or entrust one local garage for all of the work. You need to build a proper first name terms relationship with them where you are not a normal customer who has to book things in formally, and all that goes with that.

Using random places which treat you as a regular customer is a recipe for disaster and where horror stories with old cars come from.

All IMO of course, but this is a formula which is the only basis on which i would run an old car like yours (and mine).

This is the one and only time I've deviated from that very logic mate. All due to my holiday and having to have the car running by the time I came back. Been royally shafted by that mistake and it'll prove a costly one. Any minor stuff I can do myself, but removing rocker covers on my engine is a nightmare job.

Genuinely not sure what the next move should be. I could take the car back and book it into the highest rated garage here for BMW work (Redish automotive in Bristol) and try and recoup my money through clickmechanic, or leave it with the current garage to sort his mess out and potentially wait weeks for my car to be returned and there's no guarantee it'll be fixed.
