Hmm. Good luck. Never seen a dealer refurb job that matches the factory finish. The selling dealer of mine didnt manage :(

My 2016 F31 320d popped up with a yellow "Drivetrain" message on Sunday just after leaving the house. The full message said "Drivetrain - Drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available. Have the system checked by your service centre".

Power was reduced but other than that it felt, sounded and behaved totally normally. I reached my destination, then set off home about 90 mins later and it was back to normal. Completed a journey yesterday and it was also absolutely fine. From some googling it looks like this is a bit of a "catch all" error message for any number of faults or potentially a false alarm. Check control says "no faults".

I think I should still get it checked - does anyone know if it's possible for BMW to remotely diagnose via Connected Drive or will I need to take it in?

I had the exact same issue on my 2016 F10 520d. Apparently a number of the engines need sensors adjusting as the thresholds aren't quite right relating to emissions etc. It's a very minor issue but needs sorting. The Drivetrain error is a message that covers the vast majority of things as you've said.

The best thing to do is phone BMW Assist and they'll sort you out a replacement car while you take yours to your nearest BMW dealer. If you phone the dealer directly they don't often have immediate availability, even for warranty issues such as this, but BMW Assist can go over their heads. They initially said a technician would come out and have a look but phoned a couple of hours later and said it was better to take it into the dealer and they'd have a replacement car waiting.

Was sorted after a couple of days, relatively little fuss.

I've had this before. Ignored it and it never came back. When I checked the log it was simply an error message that one of the clutches had taken longer to engage than it's acceptable time frame (in reverse).

There we go then, it'll be his M-DCT transmission retrofit :D

You'll need to take it in. It's unlikely to be a false alarm.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I called my nearest dealer (Lloyd Colne) and they said if I could bring it down straight away they'd take a look today. It's with them at the moment so hopefully will know what's up soon.

The message appeared again on my way to drop it off and it seemed to be behaving strangely (shifting up into higher gears sooner than it should- possibly part of the reduced performance limp mode situation).

That's very useful to know - was wondering about calling them, will remember that for next time.

My 2012 X3 (approx 25k miles) is in for brake fluid and new front brakes and discs and I had them check out a couple of other issues, one of which was slightly louder/straining engine fan when the AC is on for which the have proposed a regas, would this be covered by warranty? I recall reading a few weeks ago in the thread that people wouldn't typically expect to have to regas the aircon, so is this indicative of some other fault?

The other things they are suggesting to replace is the electronic boot struts, as the auto-close boot has been jamming, but I would fully expect this to be warranty work. The final thing I asked them to check is the rear heated screen which doesn't seem to work, for which there is a labour charge of £90 to investigate, if found to be faulty is the investigation charge typically covered by the warranty?

I'm speaking with them in the morning when hopefully they will have checked the warranty status.

Well my Bcables sliver cable arrived today and while it completely refuses to work with the software they provided, it did work very nicely with Carly.

So now I have one touch windows, flash when locking and auto lock on drive away turned on, because they were all off for some reason? Disabled all the roof remote controls too as I have a module installed that handles that independent of the BMW method.

Little things like flashing indicators when locking the car will make such a difference, the amount of times I'm not sure if I locked it or not!

I have the £100 excess on the "everything" extended warranty. BMW swindon have always told me they have an investigation charge for my warranty items but as long as it's a genuine fault then the cost is covered and you only have to pay your excess. This excess you only have to pay one time if you have multiple items under the same garage visit (had muffler replaced on one side + idrive controller replaced together, single £100 excess payment). Don't know about re-gas sorry but if there was a fault that caused it to empty I'd expect they would cover it. I've never had a bad experience under warranty tbh and even items that they say they don't cover i've had 70% contributions to in the past.

So I spoke to BMW this morning, apparently it's recommended to regas the AC every two years, is that right? Obviously I'm loathe to pay £145 if this is not going to fix the problem (the AC works, the engine fan just sounds a bit strained when in use).

And they won't get the car back to me this week, as the rear isofix points were being re-welded (a BMW recall campaign rather than any fault with my X3), a spark fused two of the rear speaker wires together so they've ordered replacement cables from Germany but they won't arrive until next week

In the meantime I've got a 218d tourer to run around in... deceptively spacious inside and has foldable 3rd row seating! Was surprised that the boot space is actually wider than the X3's. The drive though is a bit rubbish, front wheel drive understeers and very poor grip on the front end in the wet (and this is noticeable at Jersey speeds ). On the plus side my boy is loving the big panoramic sunroof and "new car" :D
