Am I mad? https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/201712192161873?quoteref=59ec5db3-f80c-4384-a9e9-3705701db926

I've been looking for a 2016ish 535d but after test driving one of these last week I've become very tempted. Looks like a very comfortable place to be for long runs with plenty of space inside.

39k is steep but the spec looks good.

Interior is too dated for the price and certainly wouldn't spend £40k on one
Money would go on a Q7 interior is in a different league, however the 3.0 isn't as powerful

I can get past the drug dealer image, I look like an eastern european thug (unintentionally) at the best of times so the car will be the least of my issues.

thanks - but an f11 535d has an even older style interior and so I was making my justification there

Elsewhere, the new X3 interior is fantastic, I'd be waiting for the M40i variant to suffer a year of depreciation and buying that instead. At £50k currently it's somewhat expensive.

I am definitely a fan of the G30, but the X5 appeals to me for space on long journeys. We are typically driving to Poland 3-4 times per year with multiple long distance journeys once there, in addition to my commute/UK travel. With kids and dog etc etc the additional room seems beneficial. Research suggests others in similar positions have found it useful.

I thought the interior of the latest F15 looked fairly similar to the G30 tbh. It has the same digital cockpit and hud, pop up screen etc. Am I missing more subtle differences?

Have you looked at the new Q7?
In terms of space the G30 touring and X5 will not have much in it but obviously you get the extra height with the X5

X5 was launched in late 2013 iirc so yes based on F10/11 interior and the design language is dated now compared with BMWs own G30 offerings, merc E class etc and audi Q7
Spending 40k on a "generationally" outdated car is something personally I wouldn't do

There is no additional room, infact I am fairly sure the 5 Series touring has more load space than the X5.

It's an F Series car not a G Series car. Yes it has HUD and digital cockpit but these are both the items from the F10 not the G30. Whilst it has a stick-up screen that one you've linked to has the same iDrive system as the F10 5 Series. Everything in it is F10 - switchgear, electronics, gear shift lever, idrive controller, instrument cluster, steering wheel, etc etc.

None of this is a bad thing because the F10 is an excellent car, but just make sure you're aware thats what you are getting. This is what makes the X5 a difficult buy - it's either incredibly expensive (when it first comes out) or a generation behind (Once it gets to 3-4 years old and more reasonable prices).

Thanks, this is all good information. 40k is indeed a lot of beans and hence why I'm erring on the side of caution.

I can't necessarily agree though Fox that the 5 series has the same amount of room. Perhaps its just the additional ceiling height but the X5 feels much bigger both in the front and especially in the back. The figures may be similar, but perception certainly lends to the X5 being bigger.

The 5 Series touring has 570 litres of boot space and the X5 has 650. So it's true that the X5 has more room but the difference is not significant. I don't think its significant enough to be a reason to buy an F15 X5 over a G31 5 Series. The G31 is simply a more modern car and feels much more like a £40k car.

I'm not being biased here - I drive a 2015 5 Series and I absolutely love it, but it isn't a £40k car anymore.

I was going to suggest you spent a lot less if you wanted an X5 but a quick look suggests there isn't really anything around thats worth having that isn't poorer value - £33-34k gets a car thats a year older with much higher mileage than the one you've found.

Anyone know how close the prices on RealOEM are compared to what I'm likely to being paying at a dealer?

Partners Mini needs a new thermostat housing and lack of time means paying someone to do it for me so trying to gauge how much they're likely to want to charge

I believe they're ex-Vat at the very least, aren't they?

I was working on the assumption of swap a $ for a £.

So £106 for the housing
1.75 hours labour according to AutoData
Gallon of coolant

I suppose £260 is somewhere close, I think at the price I'd rather spend an evening being cold
