BMW and M Power Owners

Fair enough. Inside they are fine, depends what you are expecting. Its nicer than anything I've had. Externally I like them. It would be a coupe rather than a hatch. I agree about the looks of the hatch! Was looking at this for example... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201807238710307?sort=price-asc&radius=1500&advertising-location=at_cars&make=BMW&keywords=123d&postcode=bn150he&model=1 SERIES&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=New&page=4

Whats up with the N47 engine..?

I assume thats the same engine as in the 120D and the E9X 320D as well?

All that era of BMW 4 cylinder diesels use the N47 (previously they used M47, afterwards they were fine also) so basically x16d, x18d, x20d, x23d and also the 4 cylinder petrols have timing chain issues are all crap. I wouldn't even consider them to be honest. If you want a 1 go for a 125 or 130

Ah thats annoying.

All affected, even later ones..?

I don't specifically want a 1 series, it just looked like a nice little package for my wants. Especially the 123d since they can do 260HP with a map, fun for when I'm not on the motorway lol.

Looking at Golf GTD's and diesel Octy VRS' now... -sigh- :p

As you were all!

Warranty renewal time for my LCI M135i. Quote has come in at:

Comprehensive with £0 excess and emergency service - £633
Comprehensive with £0 excess and no emergency service - £533

Comprehensive with £100 excess and emergency service - £493
Comprehensive with £100 excess and no emergency service - £411

Comprehensive with £250 excess and emergency service - £403
Comprehensive with £250 excess and no emergency service - £320

Named Component and Driveline Warranty obviously cheaper, worth considering either of those at all?

Comprehensive with £0 excess and no emergency service - £533

This would be my choice.

You need to make 2 claims a year for this to be the most cost effective option.

Also the prices seem wrong as ES isn't 100 quid as you can see from the smaller difference in the other options.

2004 320d was able to get 60 on a run... hit over 700 more than once on 80mph trips over to Switzerland and back with low traffic.

Not sure how that compares to the 2008 engine.

You're right, it's £550 a year not £533.

I would be more inclined to go for £0 excess if the car was 4/5 years+ old, but it's just coming out of manufacturer warranty at 3 years, the likelihood of having to make multiple claims in a year will be slim at best. £100/£250 seem like the better options to me and I'll probably move onto £0 excess in year 4/5 or older before it hits 60k miles obviously.

Fox, what would you go for out of interest?

Also regarding the brake fluid service, I've booked it into Williams Manchester BMW next week, which should come in at £92 according to their site. It'll show as a 6 day late service in iDrive, but at least I'll maintain FBMWSH

£250 is clearly mathematically the best, and to be honest it is questionable as to whether its worth purchasing at all. If you must, then £250 is the financially best option. Just how often do you expect this very new car to break? :p

Hopefully not at all :D

Debatable yes, but it seems like a small price to pay for peace of mind as unexpected bills may run into the thousands, especially when taking into account main dealer labour rates. A single claim in a year will essentially cost me £570, but that's miniscule in comparison to the overall costs of an engine swap/rebuild or ZF box replacement due to the notorious M135i whine.

I'm open to be convinced otherwise though :p

The other option is to create a slush fund and put what you would pay on insured warranty into that each year and roll the dice :p

Hi guys I have a few questions.

Navigation system in France

We are driving to France for the week this Friday, to spend a week driving around sightseeing in Normandy. We planning to use the navigation system, but (prompted by a conversation with my barber), I was wondering if this will work. Do I need to download French maps?

iDrive alerts

We have had the 335 since late May, and it has been drive for 2300miles. With the exception of a couple of 2hr drives from Hertfordshire to Sussex, it has been mostly used for short drives. We took it for its longest trip yet last week, driving from near Watford (Berkhamsted) to near Durham and eventually on to Hadrians wall. We had a couple of alerts come up on the idrive, which I was a little bit surprised by:

1. Tyre pressure - I assumed it was warning that we had a puncture, and stopped off a BMW service place just off the M1. The mechanic checked it out and said the pressure was actually a bit too high on all tires, so he let a bit of air out. This was a bit surprising as I have not added any air since buying the car, and as it was used approved with a fresh service I just assumed that the tires would have been set up correctly. It didnt cross my mind at the time, but with hindsight I thought it might have been caused by the heat, as we had driven for about 1.5hrs on a hot day. How sensitive are the pressure sensors?

2. About 15min after we sorted out the tires a warning came up to add a litre of oil. I did so and the warning has gone away. Again I was surprised that car so fresh from the dealer would need an oil top up. Should I be concerned?

Rims

The front left rim gas a couple of Kerb marks - how much would it cost to get this fixed? Could anyone recommend me somewhere (near Berkhamsted). Is this something I should prioritize? It is very minor damage aesthetically, but I did hear that It can cause corrosion. They are the 403M wheels.

The navigation system will work fine in France.

The tyre pressure system on the older 335 measures the difference in wheel speed using the ABS sensors. Presumably what has happened here is that somebody set the pressures higher, reset the system and its finally dropped a tad. Nothing to worry about if you have had the tyre checked and it's fine - set all tyres to the correct temp, press reset, forget about it.

The petrol engines can use oil - a litre in 2300 miles is within specification.

Thanks fox. I'll be keeping plenty of oil in boot from now on then!

Out of curiosity how does the nav system work exactly? Is it downloading maps/data real-time or is it preloaded with maps of Europe? What made me ask in the first place was he was talking about having to download data for his Tom Tom (when he goes to Italy).

So my F11 has lost the glass covering the front fog light. It's smashed to pieces at some point this week.

Is this something that can be replaced easily or will I need an entire fog light unit?

It's service time!

What price should I be roughly looking at on an F32 430d with 31500 miles. It requires (from idrive):

  • Engine oil
  • Vehicle check
  • Brake fluid

Will be calling dealerships tomorrow but after a benchmark price.

Just did a quick quote on the BMW Service site:

Engine oil - £285 (with microfilter) or £437 (microfilter/air filter/fuel filter)
Brake fluid - £51
Vehicle check - £44 or free if at the end of warranty
