Was supposed to get them all done tonight but I borrowed a mate's torque wrench and it appears to be broken :(
I hope I haven't ****** the TMPS washer by over tightening it.

Well, my mate got back to me last night, he’s had a good look at the f11, said it drove well but was very smokey when you put your foot down and the automatic gearbox changed down with a noticeable shunt in the driveline.

I’ve said give it a miss , especially given his description of the gearbox, but I think he’s somewhat blinded by the price.....

Says he’s deciding at the weekend, which I think probably means he’ll go for it.
 
Loving my 2008 135i so far, coming from my asbo MX5 it's nice to be able to waft to work without getting a bad back and my ears bleeding, but I'm also very glad I've taken out the extended warranty with Bmw.

So far I've had the Electric Waterpump, High and Low pressure fuel pumps and a Rear wheel bearing go wrong and be promptly replaced - Not the most reliable car I've had @ 54000 miles.

Yeah, exactly!

What I don’t get is he currently drives a late V70 D5 with far fewer miles - and probably capable of matching that beemers without being on its last legs (by the sound of the gearbox at least!) at the end!

As I say I think he’s blinded by a late plate BMW for such a cheap price, I don’t think he’s considering it’s cheap for a good reason, Iwonder what a recon BMW 8 Sp auto goes for these days?

It shouldn't be smokey at all, it's a DPF fitted euro 6 car with the most modern 2 litre BMW diesel.

This all sounds very odd. I've never seen a facelift F10 smoke.

It's either a total nail or there is something iffy going on, even with the mileage this is seriously cheap for a late F11 with apparently mega spec.
 
Gearbox will need a rebuild if it's doing a shunting while changing or down the gears, especislly 3rd to 2nd.

May get lucky with the fluid/filter change but, checking adaption values if he knows of anyone that specialises in that sort of thing would be best bet.

If it's smoking, either dpf is not there, or it's got a massive boost leak somewhere and it's overfueling.

I think it’s just plain worn out by the sound of it, a Euro 6 engine shouldn’t smoke absolutely but a knackered one will if it’s got bore wear for example, failing injector(s) - there’s a multitude of things that could cause smoke, especially given the mileage.

I’ve not seen an f10/11 or indeed any late diesel car smoking, that said I doubt I’ve followed many that have done nigh on 250k miles.

Whilst I’d like to think a diesel BMW - or indeed any modern era engine - would be capable of such mileage without smoking I guess it depends entirely on how it’s been treated and driven over it’s life.

I just hope he decides against it.

Out of curiosity Fox what would you say it’s value is / could be - disregarding any potential faults - I mean as a late good spec car but literally with moon miles?
 
Looking at 15/16 430d.

What decent options should I definitely look out for? Most seem to be the base model, but some have reverse cams and driving assist.

Also what should I look out for in terms of issues, that should have been fixed under warranty, or problems for its age in general.

dont know specifically about the 30d engine
but owning my 4 series...my must have options are:

1. (professional media should be standard anyway)
2. (i think reversing cam and forward/rear parking sensors are standard)
3. xenon adaptive headlights at minimum, led adaptive if available
4. m sport plus package - sun protection glass, harman/kardon loudspeaker system and M Sport braking system
5. adaptive suspension (not DCC) - you can tell the difference in idrive - with adaptive suspension, it will give the option to change the drivetrain and suspension settings...whereas with dcc it will only allow drivetrain settings to be altered
6. (heated steering wheel is a nice option. don't have it on mine, but after trying it out on my friend's car...would recommend as a nice creature comfort extra)

Any issues with yours? Things to look out for?

I was looking at either luxury or m-sport. I'm not a car nut, so not overly concerns about some of the more sport features. I'm coming from a 06 civic.
 
@lnoton i've got a 63 428i as i don't put a lot of mileage (<3k/yr)

mine's been trouble-free for the last 2+ years i've had it
i'd recommend getting the m-sport rather than the luxury. just for the better looking aero package. helps with selling it on too lol
