BMW and M Power Owners

...but to be fair so is mileage haha

It was only like 80k or something when I got it, which is the highest mileage car I've ever bought granted, it was the spec that sealed the deal for me.

Nothing wrong with driving a car hard provided you don't go crashing into kerbs and thrashing it from the second you turn on the engine.

So you don't think driving a car hard will result in a greater chance of mechanical failure?

Not necessarily. You could argue that driving it properly keeps everything up to temps and working well.
Plus, is he ragging it around town in 1st gear or bombing down the M1 at 150? Big difference.

Driving a car in any way will result in a greater chance of mechanical failure. Stuff wears out: simple as that. My point (as I'm sure you knew) is that it sounds like NVP has been particularly unlucky in this case. I drive my cars hard in the sense that I use the full power of the engine multiple times per day and generally sustain high speeds where possible, but I let them warm up and take care not to bounce them off kerbs etc. My three old Jags were reliable, as is my old Range Rover and my Caliber, which all have pretty poor reputations in terms of build quality, so I must be doing something right.

So, just to be clear, you're arguing that putting greater mechanical stresses through components won't shorten their useful lifespans?

You like switching the debate to a point no one made. This is quite obvious and doesn't relate to the fact this car has been more trouble than any other I've owned when you consider the fact they've all been stressed the same way.

How picky were you when buying the car in terms of profiling its previous owner? (or owners, but personally i would not want to buy a more than 1 owner car really unless i could trace it to new).

I have a couple of bad cars, and loads of good ones. The bad ones tally with buying them from dodgy places with more than one owner :p

I'm very picky. It was a 2 owner but the last owner had it for 60-70k if I remember rightly. First owner was a dentist who chose the greatest spec, second owner used it for motorway miles. Full service history, condition was excellent, the only issue was it was high mileage (~80k). Everything seemed to check out and appeared to be an ok price for a car with 4WS, adaptive suspension, comfort access, pano roof, soft close doors etc. (huge spec). :(

You just seem very unlucky then, 80k miles is hardly high. The problem with cars when they continually break, when do you exit from them? Once you resolve the drivetrain issues in theory it might be fine for ages. This is the flaw when people say that they'll just get rid if it goes wrong, it never makes sense to do so based on one current fault.

Yep, especially when the first big bill was 4k+ or whatever it was. I just can't anymore. And I've changed jobs so no longer commuting 200miles a day, I catch a 12min train now, time to get back into a petrol which can handle abuse.

4k+ seems mad but i think that was a conversation from a while ago :p

I guess you have to fix it, unless its very high mileage now then you'll take too much of a loss selling it as a non runner.

I want a set of 19" m359 (CSL) alloys for my e92 m3.. Genuine sets are scarce and £2-3k it seems, Does anyone know of any good quality reps that wont explode or cave in when I inevitably hit a huge pot hole...

I've been looking at these.. https://cmwheels.com/product/19-staggered-csl-style-wheels-hyper-silver-e90-e91-e92-e93-e46-m3/

They are a bit too CSL for the E92 and will stand out as reps. The excessive rear dish gives it away. Maybe have a look on m3cutters?

they deffo need that sort of wheel though which is why I only considered a competition pack

It's above 150k at least now, got to be. Shame it's not drivable otherwise theres a park nearby which gets littered with burnt out cars :D

That's such a beautiful car. I'm struggling not to buy one now they are falling to the 10k area. They need those wheels or the stock 18s IMVHO.

I have had a chat with the seller about this one... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202001116052493
