BMW and M Power Owners

435i...something to bear in mind:

35i spark plugs...The schedule is the schedule: Minor service, major service (incl spark plugs) and so on.

I totally agree that they do not need to be changed after 11k, but I got into very hot water with BMW Insured Warranty after a catastrophic engine failure...because I skipped a plug change at 46k (they'd last been done 22 months prior at 26k). My warranty was cancelled and I faced a £4k repair bill on my N55...VVT servo, VVT eccentric shaft, DME and waterpump all failed around the same time.

Now it all worked out ok in the end as I gathered some evidence from BMW UK around the CBS that applies to these cars, set out my position as a formal complaint and ultimately escalated the matter to FOS. I got all my money back with interest, but it was a long old battle. I had a car off the road for 4 months while this was all going on. Fortunately I had the capacity to buy an AUC M5.

BMW Insured see things in total black and white. They told me that they would never cover the 335i again, so once it was repaired I sold it. It was all fixed but I didn't want the risk hanging over me in the future. Shame as it was a lovely car, an SE on 17s so very comfortable!!

... where it gets slightly trickier is if you have some of the work done at Indy's. Anyone had Indy work done and then claimed on BMW warranty for something later on?

I believe the warranty will be fine provided that you service is according the demands of the schedule and use only genuine/approved parts.

I agree about the servicing not seeming too expensive through the main dealer though. My F80 is now out of its service pack so I'm paying for the next one (a minor) and BMW have quoted me £258 all in. Not sure the next one will be quite so wallet friendly though as it's spark plugs again.

Very interested in an 2017 msport 335d xdrive and have a few questions to potentially fellow owners.

Are there anything I should be wary of and concerned about?

What is the true avg mpg?

Price of a service ?

Is extended warranty really required ?

Thanks

No idea about the 335d but I've taken out the extended warranty on my 335i, costs around £520 with £100 excess and recovery. These are complex car and to date I've not had to claim but they generally throw huge numbers when they do go wrong.

Timing chain can stretch.

MPG wise according to a friend between 35-40mpg but he cains it everywhere.

I’d get the warranty no doubt.

I see.. it looks to be around 550 for the year.. maybe have to factor it in for peace of mind then I guess.

What's the average costs of a service ?

And would you guys recommend this model ?

Depends on your requirements? How many miles do you do?

Servicing costs, don’t know as I had a service pack on mine but I do know it’s cheaper than Honda for my car :D

9k miles per year and is looking at a 3l diesel to try and save on mpg pennies...
Also B road driving, wants fun and is looking at a diesel.

i dont mind 30mpg at all im getting that now, just not something low 20s. The main selling point is from what ive read its a great all rounder and i like the look of one of them that ive seen.

No need for the sarcastic remarks :)

I'd personally only be looking at getting a diesel if I was doing well above 15k miles per annum. When I got my 335i the 335d was more, so with my low mileage and the extra cost of the diesel it was an easy choice for me.

@Dis86 won't the higher torque of the diesel be a bonus on B roads?

The petrol variant is a lot more money and even worse MPG, i average around 9k miles per year FYI

Realistically, on B roads, I'd suggest you'd be looking at around 35mpg. My old 2006 335i with the old N54 engine got 27mpg average, without driving it carefully, on A/B roads. I'd hope that a 2017 335i would be capable of more!

When you work it out, the difference between 35mpg and 27mpg when you're doing 9k miles a year isn't that much at all. Just doing some quick sums:

130p diesel 125p petrol

9000/35 = 257 gallons of fuel over the year
257 x 4.54 = 1167 litres diesel.
1167 x 1.30p = £1517

Same sums as above but for petrol: £1891

So circa £370 a year or £30 a month difference in fuel. It's £30 well spent IMO. The petrol six cylinders are lovely and are better suited for fun, B road driving. Plus they sound much better than the diesel.

Don't forget, this is the kind of car which will cost you £250 for a minor service and £450 for a major service and £650 for a set of tyres.

The 335i would be one I would also choose given the prices being similar but for what ever reason there a good couple k more money for the spec mileage and year I'm after.
