BMW and M Power Owners

Who knows? It's difficult to say. The only similar older car was the E39 D10 BiTurbo but they were absolutely mega rare.

I mean realistically who is going to want to drop 20k+ on a 10-15 year old diesel 5 Series? What is the point?

I do like Alpina but I do struggle to understand where the extra value comes from at the money they command.

Fair point. I guess it’s the badge and “exclusivity”. Whether it is worth £20k+ compared to models which are similar and cheaper does make me question which kind of demographic purchases these cars second hand.

I’ve only ever seen one on the road and that was a f11 driven by a older gentlemen.

ive been looking at something like this :
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202010175119337?make=BMW&body-type=Hatchback&advertising-location=at_cars&sort=price-asc&fuel-type=Petrol&postcode=ox394je&transmission=Automatic&year-from=2015&radius=1500&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly New&onesearchad=Used&quantity-of-doors=5&model=1 SERIES&page=1

but a bit too much for me, so maybe something older ?

all the automatic cars ive been looing at seem to be from 8K, some around 10K, so i then looked at the BMW 1 series and its around that price too, maybe next year these will come down a wee bit
That’s such a poor spec, I’d rather have something less “prestigious” and better specified.

i only highlighted it, thats the sort of engine id like, but is it worth going older to get a better spec? like a 2013 one ?
I’d certainly prefer one with a better spec over a newer low spec one, but I can’t help but think that if that’s too rich for your budget then you’d be best off getting something else all together.

Are we talking about build quality or reliability? They are two seperate things - you can have a car with the worst build quality ever that is super reliable and vice versa. The quality of the cabin etc in the F10 is good IMHO.

As for reliability weirdly the F10/F11 are the most reliable cars either myself or my Dad have ever owned. It has now been nearly 7 years since we started buying them and we've each had two (He's moved on to a G32 now) and none of them suffered a single major issue. I was very surprised.

The most unreliable car I have ever owned remains my E39 :D
I guess I’m on about both, yes it’s weird they seem hit & miss both reliably and build quality wise (my nephew had an f20 which was both full of squeaks and kept refusing to start, his current M240i seems beautifully put together and has yet to fail him, equally we have two guys at work both with 65 plate f10’s, one despite being north of 200k - and bought cheaply on Facebook! - has been faultless the other with a quarter of the miles - and which was an AUC - is constantly back at BMW because he keeps turning up in a different courtesy car which the owner of the cheap leggy one teases him about relentlessly! :D

A petrol Alpina I can certainly see retaining value indeed it increasing beyond a certain age - look at e38 B12’s, crazy money these days - but I’ve personally never quite got the idea of a diesel Alpina, tried a d3 bi turbo which was a lovely bit of kit but it just didn’t have that something that the e38, e39 petrol versions have.

Lovely trim, and nice styling with a “sporty” look just seems to fall down once you see the D badge....

You seem insistent on picking really poorly specced examples. You want one with pro nav, xenons, preferably sport seats (SE seats are like sitting on a park bench), and with climate control rather than the manual AC of the two you’ve linked.

That's becuase I can't find a decent spec really for the prices I'd pay

I know in the old e46 there was more room for me to get in my 3 door coupe than there was getting into the 4 door... not sure why, seat positioning maybe?

Check out the two and see what you think :)

Thanks

5 doors though ideally, unless there isn't really much difference? I've got flexibility problems, so I need the door open wider

Over 10k for 2013 car ? Thats a lot isn't it ?

I payed close to 20k for a 2011... welcome to bmw :) (in 2017)

I'd assume because of it being a 3 door and the doors being wider.

If you are in a situation whereby you can open the door wide then you are correct - there is more room to get in and out of a 3 door car than the 5 door version of the same car.

However, if you're in a carpark or similar with limited space, the longer doors of the 3 door model impede access more than the shorter doors of the 5 door version. So, on balance, the wider opening of the 3 door is more of a hinderance than it is a benefit for those who have access issues.
