BMW and M Power Owners

Woke to some damage and a note this morning, I've contacted Tim and thanked him for actually leaving the note, he accepts responsability but says I parked inconsiderately, not leaving enough room for him to get out (He drives a large scrap metal type van with the big metal cage around it) which was on his (very tight) driveway which he was reversing out of at the time.

I've gotten a quote, £880 total, for new genuine rear spoiler and tailgate lamp inc fitting, there doesn't appear to be any bodywork damage. Tim want's to keep it out of insurance companys hand's which I'm glad of, but he'd like me to pay 1/4 (£220).. He's a genuine old guy and I do feel for him a bit considering the size of the bill for such a small bump.
What say you ocuk motors? Should I stand my ground and insist he pays it all or should I chip in too?

It really depends on how you parked at the circumstances.

I used to live in a property with a drive and a dropped curb onto a street where people parked along one side of it, and usually either side of my dropped curb.

Even in my fiesta at the time, it made it really difficult to get out of.

If the situation was similar to what I described, then I think paying 1/4 is fair.

Equally, though, as a driver you do have a responsibility to not hit anything. If you think it's too tight, you shouldn't make the manoeuvre.

What are your thoughts?

Edit: I'd be tempted to pay a 1/4 purely due to the fact he left a note - rare thing to do these days.

Whilst he should pay the lot, he could have buggered off like many do, if he's your neighbour and a genuinely nice guy, be nice to keep the peace, though I'd suggest to him he could have knocks on your door in future if he is struggling.

People park over my drive a lot, a good section of their vehicles over double yellows surrounding my dropped kerb, it is very frustrating, like they have a right, makes it very tight to get a long SUV out as it is a small road, missus has similarly hit a car parked in an inconsiderate way, I left a note offering to assist with repair, had a bit of grief from the victim, who moved the car back before calling in to me but already had pictures, not my neighbour so when he got arsey, I told him to call police / insurance if he likes, can't say which way it would go as you are blocking a driveway with 1/4 of car on double Yellows, he let me fix it, but wow, what an arse, park properly in the first place there'd be no issue.

I'm often inclined to totally ram them :o my tank is not worth a lot and I fancy causing maximum inconvenience to the offender but then my reasonable side takes over (missus) but one day, if I'm having a bad day, it's going to happen. :D

Thats why you reverse UP your driveway. So you dont have to do the awkward manoeuvre on the way out....
Anyhow. I'd pay the 200 to help him out. At least he was honest, thats got to count for something..

Makes no difference, you still need a turning arc. If the road is two cars wide like mine and someone has closed up the accessway, you need to be Automan and be able to do 90 degrees turn with no arc, or drive an something like an Ami or Up.

When people park like this we have to drive along the pavement on other side of the road to get the arc, which is not good.

He is scrap man neighbor so I'd suggest you play ball otherwise lots of other issues may appear lol.

Of course it makes a difference.
The turning end of the vehicle is at the opposite end. You still need an Arc yes.. But the Arc starts in a different place. Theres also visibility. If you drive down the street observing then reverse up the drive. Thats much better than trying to reverse between a set of gate posts or cars that you cant see past because youve got 10 foot of vehicle to edge out first.

It is what we do everyday, always reverse in, it doesn't help you get out when some one has closed the accessway, the tank is 4.65m with longish wheel base, it doesn't have the turning circle, my little 4m hatchback or convertible can do it anyway as they are shorter wheelbase with better turning circle.

Maybe not but it gives a better fighting chance. If theres room your more likely to get out if youve reversed in.
Especially as reversing seems to be a dark art that most can't do.

But Kudos to the guy for owning up

Sandy are you the chap at B&Q who pushes the low loading trolley?

No, who can control those :D

In our case it's double yellows on both sides of the road because the road is too narrow for anything else, there should be no cars parked due to causing obstruction, just so happens road widens after my house and makes two parking spots where people take liberties with double yellows because they can't park and there's not much street parking around, half in a space is apparently in, that is all.

had my third puncture in 6 months on the x5 yesterday. Rear tyre again, the ones which cost £400 a pop. :(

All it was this time was a sharp stone! Had enough of these bridgestones being made out of toffee. Ordered 4 new decent tyres for it.

And the wear has been awful on them. Rears down to 1mm left before they need replacing after only 11,000 miles.

We've got a couple of rr sport p400es at work and they're on pirelli scorpions. Absolutely dire. Stones shred them to pieces.

What did you go for tyre wise?

Think our G05 had Contis, which seemed to be ok.

Have Hankook S1 Evo Z* on the X3 now and they seem to be really decent, handle the power really well, even on a wet road. Can only imagine how good the PS4S must be.

Finally picked up my M140i, very happy now!

First mod has arrived today too. The silver mirrors looked well put of place as everything else is grey and black, so I'm swapping them to black ones too!

Next up may be to lower it slightly

The silver mirrors are what makes it look different to yet another 118d M Sport with black wheels and black mirrors :(

Does £370 seem like a reasonable price to replace the battery for my 640d? This includes the required coding of the battery (main dealer).

The existing battery is 10 years old and I think it'll struggle this winter. I have Carly but it's missing the function of battery coding otherwise I'd replace it myself.

I replaced my 320d’s battery for £160, coded myself.

A quick look suggests the 640d’s battery is similar cost for a reoutable brand (Bosch, Varta, Yuasa) so I suggest you fit yourself, and take to your friendly local garage for coding using or other coding suite. It took me about 30 mins including coding to fit.

I thought Carly allowed you to do it, although I think you need the premium version. Batteries that accommodate start stop are expensive but £370 seems a lot for what should be a simple job.

From the main BMW dealer the battery is £289 and fitting is £81. I'll have search for an equivalent and if any independents locally can do the coding, as well as checking myCarly again to diy.

It's an old Carly device and been ages since I used it, no need when there isn't a problem :). There used to be a feature on their website where you could see what features you could do with Carly but that's gone from their website now. Talking of Carly's website, it's a god damn car crash! It use to be so easy to check available features, now it's just BUY ME! BUY ME!. Plus the price has gone up considerably since I last used it, £140 but that does include a "free" scanner (which I already have). I'll try the free version of the app again before going any further.
