BMW and M Power Owners

I'm struggling with these. I've done about 3.5k miles in the last year. I do not need one of these but I need one of these. I should probably just get an M340 touring tbh. BUT. Man maths.
Don't.

The S58 begs to be spanked and driven hard, it's hard to resist.

Must think of the MPGz :p

We went to Eastbourne from Gloucester/Brockworth yesterday and came home today. I was pondering taking the M3 however ultimately decided against it as when I looked, it was just going to be cold, and I don't trust the PSS in the cold. What a decision that was, as pretty much all of the Cotswolds/Cheltenham/Gloucester area was carpeted with snow this morning - abandoned cars in the middle of the road and road closures everywhere. I've never seen anything like it. And off the main roads, the roads are quite bad too, lots of snow/slush and now ice. By the time we got through Birdlip and home, the Police/Highways Agency closed the route. We were lucky to have got back. I'm certain had I been in the M3 we'd have to have abandoned it along with all the other BMWs. Had I known about the snow we wouldn't have gone in the first place.

But, it turns out that the Tiguan with 4 Motion is an absolute demon in the snow even on the OE Pirelli Scorpion tyres. With some all seasons that thing should be able to go anywhere.

If there is nothing to say they have been sorted already first and foremost would be swirlflap removal. Follow that up with a new crankcase breather just in case that has been neglected. Other than that make sure it gets up to temperature and keep an eye on the glowplugs, if one of the thermostats (EGR or main) or the glowplugs fail it will stop a DPF regeneration because the system requires certain perameters to be met before it will activate a regeneration. Luckily the latter isn't such an issue for someone driving an old croker of an M57 like mine in my E46! Swirlflaps and crankcase breather were done within a few weeks of me owning the E46, I was taking no chances, in fact I'm pretty sure I ordered swirl flap blanks in advance of buying the car. Oil changes every 10-12k is my rule of thumb for servicing and not the 18k as suggested by the OBC. Much later down the line vacuum lines may need replacing.

Mine does need the main thermostat and glow plugs replacing which I'll get booked in very shortly, but even then it still starts up first turn of the key with 206k on it in current temperatures.

Generally, they are solid engines, I've seen an E46 330d on eBay with nearly 500k miles on the clock for example. They're not as refined as the later N57, but I just couldn't live with a higher mileage N57 day-to-day wondering if the timing chain is going to snap or if its going to spin a main bearing, which will sound over-dramatic to some, but that's me. Personally, I'd not flinch at buying another M57 engined car with around 100k on the clock.

Much appreciated write up! Swirl flap removal very much on the list of jobs.

I've cleared the 30 odd codes with Carly and two persist, the first is 43E2 (DDE Throttle valve actuator, activation), and 9C5A, non engine related, but first thing first is to get that first code fixed.

There's also a clicking from the engine on idle, which immediately disappears when moving. Pleasures of picking up an old motor... :) will get it looked at.

I've contacted BMW UK for the original spec sheet of the X5 and allegedly it was running 19" style 213s out of the factory, however it has the larger 20"s on it now.

I quite like the look of the wheels on it currently but I'm a sucker for originality, and of course saving a few quid on tyres where I can, so would probably seek to pop the originals back on it.

My question is.. how accurate are the original VIN spec sheets from BMW?

having an issue with resetting my rear brake service indicator. changed my rear disk's and pads along with the wear sensor, but when i came to reset the wear counter it was telling me it was unsuccessful. I bought another sensor and tried that but still the same. now the computer has gone over the mileage and i am now presented with a warning message every time i start the car and a brake warning light on the dash. to top it all off my mot is due soon.

Any help guys?

Chaps,
After a bit of advice.
My 140i lease is ending in March so I'm having a think of what to do next.

Quite like the new 2 series, but not a 240i. New monthly would be near £800! That's over double my current lease. Even a 118i is over £100 more than my 140i! Crazy times!!

Anyone have experience with a 220i or 230i?

New models come with iDrive 8 which looks pretty neat too.
Hoping test one next week.

Not sure if I should just keep my 140i too. BMW valued it at 20500. (19 plate, spotless, almost fully equipped, 20k miles)

If ID8 is the one with touch controls for the climate control and/or those big curved screens - no thank you.

Also, why lease? Must it be new? Leasing is probably the most expensive way to own a car.

It is and I agree with you. Personally, I'll be after one of the last cars with the previous version, which is unusual because for me the latest version of iDrive is normally even more important than the engine :D

What is the GFV?

Thanks for the input guys. Must admit, haven't played with the latest version but I am a passionate hater of no physical buttons. Was hoping wheel was still able to do most of it.
I leave my AC on auto and leave it anyway.

Final payment is £14.7k

So about 5K equity. I'd just go for it tbh. What does a new car really get you?

Sorry for the confusion.
One option I have is to just buy the car. I could. Of just do another 4 years.

Presumably if you could buy the car, you're better doing that than another 4?
