BMW and M Power Owners

M340i is coming up to 3 years old so I've had the first warranty letter. Having a look online and I can't seem to work out the difference between Comprehensive Warranty and Named Component Warranty - can anyone shed any details?

Comprehensive is £707/year with no excess, Named Component is £596/year with no excess.

That's eye-wateringly... cheap! :p

Comprehensive 100%.

Yeh I'm quite happy with that, according to BMW it's "just a 3 series"! Can understand why Fox et others get frustrated that 5/6/7/8 series are much more expensive when they share a lot of components underneath!

Yes, my 840i renewal will likely be at least 3-4x that, despite having the same engine, gearbox and no xDrive system. Mine does have a lot of complicated tech on it, but they are mostly options, so don't affect the warranty cost.

The simplest way to look at it is: the warranty price is based on the cost of the car when new, but there are a few exceptions to this, mainly with the M cars.

It does, yes. You should get a hire car for up to 48 hours which in theory you can then exchange for a loan car from the repairer (or your car, repaired!). It also covers things like accommodation if you're away from home, cover in Europe etc.

I think that for £80 it's fairly good for what it offers.

Plus they will turn up on a flat bed to recover the car so the auto boxes don't have an issue

They'll do this without Emergency Service (The breakdown cover) as well - if you're not at home - and take the car to the nearest main dealer.

I just saw what I think was a new 5 series today. Whatever it was, it had the big beaver teeth front grill which didn't leave any space for the number plate at the bottom. So the number plate was plastered right across the middle of the grill... The car looked bad enough but the number plate across the grill took it to new levels of awfulness. I don't know what BMW were on when they designed their latest cars!

sounds more like a 4 series or an m3? New 5 series isn't out yet.

the m3/4 and 4 series still have by far the biggest grill of any BMW though, but very surprised if you've managed to go 2.5 years without seeing one!

UK front licence plate rules are very different to the continent where some front plates are much smaller or even non-existent. Old Alfa's like the 155 and 156 also had the same issue.

German plates don't look that different?

EDIT: Apologies, you're right. They are 520x110mm vs UK's 520x111mm. So ours are indeed 1mm taller :D

What? No they're not - they are largely the same. I can think of a few of countries (Maybe 2 or 3?) with smaller front plates but none at all where no front plates are required. The vast majority require a front number plate of almost exactly the same dimensions as ours?

That was the one. Only saw it in passing. I've certainly never noticed any of these cars around before. Folks round here seem to prefer the SUVs rather than cars. I'm sure I would've remember seeing such a major design fail before - that's REALLY bad

I have had a mixed bag of emotions from people but I think it looks good in the flesh but it needs to be the dark colour grill & right colour car.

The biggest difference with the new 440 cars (had a f32 before) is the interior plus it's definitely a motorway car as it eats the miles with no issues

Other than Switzerland and Italy, who have smaller plates on the front, all of Europe has standard sizes front and back
Perhaps your thinking of the USA?

-edit Andorra, Moncaco & Liechtenstein have small ones too..
