BMW and M Power Owners

Well I can now join in this thread :)

Picked my up first BMW for nearly 20 years on Friday.
1 owner 23k miles FBMSH, 240i in sapphire metallic black, with extra black everwhere ! M sport lined seatbelts, heated and powered seats, heated steering wheel, upgraded sport brakes, sport auto transmission, comfort Access, Privacy glass at rear, cruise, Adaptive led ligts, HK speakers, satin chrome trim, Jet Black 662M wheels.
Unfortunately just the business nav so the small screen, but I can live with that.
TBH I would have spec'd it differently but the likelihood of me finding everything I would have wanted used was very slim !
Absolutely loving it so far.
A couple of gratuitous pics after todays clean and wax session:

Poor Boys Black Hole. Thank me later.

Edit: Sorry without context that’s a really weird thing to say. It’s a resin-based glaze made for dark/black paint.

Still struggling with the ******* timing of the charging. I don't understand why the car keeps changing its internal timer.

The solution I thought might work is to set the charger to operate only during my off peak hours - 23:30 - 05:30. But, then the car decided it wanted to charge in the afternoon?!

I set the car to charge immediately, and then the charger wiped its operating hours.

I put in quite a stern complaint to the charger supplier as I don't think its been commissioned properly, but it's also out of warranty I think. But if it hasn't been properly commissioned, in my opinion the manufacturer needs to take responsibility.

Seems to be a fair few m340d xdrives available for sale and Williams have an extended warranty event next week, i don't do loads of miles would this be an issue for a diesel? I have a 10 mile round trip for the school run where i have two stretches of dual carriage way to blast down but i'd say my mileage would be 7-8k maybe a year. Got a bunch of cars to look around over the next week or two and just seeing if i need to rule these out.

Why would you want an M340d if you don't do lots of miles?

The M340i is more powerful, more fun to drive and surprisingly fuel efficient.

The M340d is a great car but it's strength is for those who do a lot of miles. If you don't then I see little reason to buy one.

M340d seems to be much more available and generally cheaper. So for example 21 plate 41k on clock 27k | 21 plate M340i 46k on clock 29k
Not much in it by all means in terms of cost more around availability seems to be more of the diesels and looking at stats alone (not driven either) diesel looks decent. Not sure what serving costs between petrol/diesel maybe cheaper for petrol?

I don't think that is the case - there is only one M340d at the price you mention and it's cheap because it has a very basic specification. The prices are quite sensitive to specification - there are only 7 cars under £30k on the BMW site and only 2 of these are M340d. All of them are low specification cars or higher mileage.

For a nice example of either as a BMW Approved Used you're going to need a bit more budget - a quick look through what is available shows that they are fairly similar in terms of price and how many of them there are, so my point remains - I'd buy the petrol one in your position (as I did myself!) and make sure it has at least the Technology Pack.

I have nothing against diesel, I think they are great - but for what you've said you'd use the car for the M340i seems like the ideal choice. It's fun and interesting, it sounds great, it's got a fantastic engine and it's not bad for fuel consumption either. There won't be much difference in running costs between them other than the fuel consumption.

Spot on thanks, wasn't really looking at packs to be honest. I like heated seats and reverse camera like I've got on my car so I think all them at base do more than what I have now by a fair bit. I got my car at 44k miles it's now just coming up to 62k miles 4 years later and a tadge over 10 years old, thinking of aiming for similar mileage via approved mileage wise and obviously 2021 is a lot newer than what I've got.

Sound will be nice, mines 2litre petrol turbo getting to 60 in just over 6seconds and it sounds nice so again this would be an upgrade.
My budget was more down to keeping pcp payments low for a couple of years when I'll have the money to pay the lot of early although I have noticed some bmw have a lower Apr than others so can likely stretch up without it costing as much due to the lower Apr.
Will take a look tomorrow. Thanks for the insight

Lower APR on used? I think it’s 13 or 14%, there is no way I’d use BMWFS for PCP on an approved used car.

11.9% at some 13.9 at others which i don't quite get. I got my current car on HP through Lloyds BMW but the login portal was a BMW financial services portal, i paid mine off early with no hassle which was good.
Why wouldn't you use them?

I did kinda think about that, but then it probably would be too much blackness, not quite owned by Hotblack Desiato from Disaster Area :)

No worries, I got the reference. I used Fusso99 dark. I have a few Waxes and QD's But never tried any PB stuff.

Because it's expensive and you can get better rates elsewhere for PCP, or just buy it outright using a bank loan and 0% credit card(s) if you have the means.
Fair enough, my current car is the only time i've financed a car and didn't actually know you could get PCP from outside of the dealership will have a read on money saving expert, look at carwow and the likes. Think my only credit card can only have 5 or 6k on it, only use it for weekly shops so utilisation is pretty much none which is likely why they're not trying to throw large limits at me

Because the likes of HSBC offer personal loans of up to £15k @ 6.9% APR, and up to £25k @ 7.4%. Bank loans are generally more flexible in terms of overpayments as well.

Also the obvious benefit of the loan not being against the car, so you can sell / trade / do what you want with the car whilst still repaying the loan.

I will add another vote for Petrol, 10 miles a day isn't going to be great for the DPF. (unless they are a lot better than they used to be ?)
As regards PCP, be wary as the finance companies can be funny with early settlement on PCP ... they don't like it as the idea is to lure you into changing every few years.
I have had a few in the past which I paid off at term no issue, but when I wanted to pay my last one off 4 months early they would not accept a lump sum payment of the 4 months and a handback.
Luckily, I was in a position I could take the hit and trade it in for the BMW I intended to buy outright.
At the very minimum see if you can structure it so you are past 50% of the total finance amount at the time you want to pay it off, and like others have said, shop around. Aim as close to 5% as you can get or use a 0% card if you can.
