BMW and M Power Owners

Why a diesel?

Because the last 3 cars I have had have been diesels, ok granted I dont do as much milage as I used to, however still do now and again and its nice to have the higher MPG, plus diesel engines seem to be more robust, I have not had any engine based problems in the last 3 cars iv had, suffice to say I had a few on my petrol ancesters

Noisy, not refined and annoying power delivery. Fairly fragile too. Not worth the bother as a cheap car, get a nice petrol six.

Cheers, not sure on a petrol, not owned one in a while, and when I did I had a few engine niggles, touch wood apart from a few minor glitches (non engine related) the diesel engines I have had have been fine, especially my current 2.0 in the Golf.

Is going petrol going to be really that much of a saving?

I want something that will return me between 47-50mpg avg, have a good solid engine that has no majorly known issues.

Why did you open with "don't be harsh on me"? Haha. It's like you know deep down it's a bad idea :D

I always open with that when I post in here :p

Mainly head gasket issues on two cars, but I guess they come at the higher milage which mine was so I cant really complain.

Owned Golf's since, its become my safe zone (apart from the MK4 which was riddled with electrical problems) engines have always been solid though.

I want to make a transition to a new car and think BMW or Audi are my only passions at the moment.

Really enjoying my 330d so far. The ride is much more comfortable with less road noise than my Z4 and having a big boot has been amazing. Helped my sister move house at the weekend and managed to get so much in. I've had the front pads replaced as well as the handbrake and shoes refurbished (£200 all in) and it's running with no issues (for the time being!).

I'd rather a 325ci or 330ci over the 320d, I drove one for about 50 miles on a trip to Nottingham (and then getting lost in Nottingham) and the power delivery was annoying on it.

The bigger straight sixes aren't that bad on fuel on motorway runs, my 330ci will return anywhere between 35-39mpg on a motorway run at about 65/70mph on a clear day, and about 20-22mpg around town if I'm driving like a saint.

HTH

20-22mpg return in and around town seems quite low, but I guess thats because I am used to the higher mpg brackets, the prices on the petrol models dont seem bad, and they generally seem a lot better, but I know if I get one I will end up regretting it when I do longer trips.

I used to get under 30 mpg on short town trips inthe older 320d so it's not exactly going to be super economical around town anyway.

If economy is a big priority then you don't want an old BMW anyway as they cost money to keep going.

On longer trips the 330i is easily mid 30s, more if you take it easy.

As above, just to chuck my 2p in - the 320d is quite frankly crap compared to any 6 cylinder model. It sort of made sense when the car was relatively new and you "just want a BMW with reasonable economy" but now they're getting on it has next to no merits (for me)

The 330d/cd is a much better engine, but you take an economy hit to the point where it's not all that much better than the petrol, or at least not really enough to offset the potential for bigger bills (by all means you could own one for a couple of years and nothing go bang, but if it did it'd be expensive). If you were going to take a chance on an e46 diesel it'd have to be one of these imo.

The big 6 petrols are refined, pretty economical and sound better than the diseasels. There's also less of a premium as everyone else pretty much wants a diesel car.

You can't really argue about 35+mpg on a run from a na petrol car with 230bhp imo.

I never got over 35mpg in my 330Ci (in 2006). I only did a couple of thousand miles in it but in mixed driving conditions it struggled to average 29mpg.

I routinely beat that in my heavier 530I.

In 3000 miles around Europe along autobahns, up mountains and through cities it averaged exactly 35.

My average was circa 28mpg, but I drive a mixed route every day. If I spent 30mins+ on clear motorway mid 30's was perfectly achievable (and I don't tend to try to save fuel)

On the last big run I did from Birmingham to Newcastle and then back again (95% motorway use), I averaged 38mpg in the 330ci which included a fair bit silly driving to catch up to the rest of the convoy :)

As Fox said though, don't buy one if economy is your main concern, they do cost a bit to keep them running properly.

Best I achieved was a run from Worcester to the Lakes in August 2012 in a 330i, I averaged 42 on the way in. Couldn't match it on the way back though.

My town driving gives me 25 nowadays, via brim to brim test.

I've seen mine hit the 41-42mpg on a few occasions when driving along an empty M42, but I've never trusted it :p
