BMW and M Power Owners

The main attractions for me are it's noise, I think the exhaust note is possibly the best I've ever heard on any car, real F1 sound, how does it sound in the cabin though?

Does it feel quick or does it's mass dull the acceleration?

How has reliability being for you?

The engine note in the cabin is spot on for my tastes. You don't get an earful of exhaust, what you get is the very warm musical tone of the engine. At full throttle over about 3k rpm it sounds wonderful.

I've owned mine for almost 4 years now and it still feels very quick - you've owned some pretty quick cars so might beg to differ, but I honestly don't think you could really need anything quicker. It's so quick it's pretty much impossible to really stretch it's legs properly on the road. The good news is that unlike the F10 M5 which I found a little too "perfect" (for example stunningly fast acceleration throughout the rev range), the e60 has a bit more character and needs the engine to be worked a little harder to extract the best from it. That's not to say it doesn't pull below 3k rpm. While not known for it's torque, it's still a big engine and is flexible enough to still cruise very well when you're not gunning for it.

Reliability has been better than I'd anticipated. I have the BMW extended warranty on mine and in 4 years and ~26k miles (it's now on 67k) have only had to claim on it once (for the bluetooth module of all things). Otherwise it's just been routine servicing.

Was yours the silver one at a meet about 4 years back? I have to thank you for turning up otherwise who knows what I'd be in :D

I remember Pete taking me out in his E60 M5 at the Surrey RR meet a few years back, probably about that timing you speak of NVP actually as I believe it was Late 2010/ early 2011 ish.

I'd been out in Pete's E39 M5 about a billion times as we used to live together, and his previous M5 had the 'stock sound' supersprint exhausts that were so throaty our neighbour asked him to park exhaust away from the house as it made his kitchen shake.... the E60 M5 is nothing like that. Its a beautiful exhaust note and actually quiet enough that you could cover Europe in it and feel fresh at the end. Superb car.

Its soundtrack was IMO, not too far away from another friends 355 Ferrari. If you wanted something more, involving, noise level wise, I've heard an M6 with some sort of aftermarket exhaust that sounded nothing short of a race car. Incredible, but no thanks for day to day.

M5 is going to be disappointing as a 'big power' car when your M3 has a better P:WR and the M5 is low on torque. Great for high speed but that's the one aspect of it's performance which you will never exploit so it's pointless.

I hate the M6 looks wise though, yep its faster, lighter which says its more for me, but my god its such an ugly car.

The M5 looks/styling I really do like and to get the sound released more is easy and low cost, just remove or bore out the pre-cats and add a remap in from Evolve, worth 50BHP or so, making it well worth it.

Quite a good point Clarkey, though I think once rolling, I think the M5's power would come more into effect. Chris Harris showed a perfect example of how un-important P:WR is on a road car by taking a Caterham VS Cayman in a drag race, by all accounts the Caterham had much better P:WR but the Cayman absolutely slaughtered it once over 30mph, was not remotely close and that is why there is no substitute for cc/power. :)

I'm currently looking at upgrading my 335i to a facelift E92 M3 (need to experience that V8 before it is too late!).

Can somebody please confirm exactly when the new CIC iDrive was introduced on the E92 M3 and when it was facelifted with the fresher looking rear lights?

Am I also right in thinking that they improved the mpg at some point? Did that occur when the lights were updated?

Thanks.

Lip spoiler arrived from Taiwan today, perfect colour match as far as I can see.

Exterior is now 96% done, just the exhaust tips left to come

Aye! I did bathe that area of the boot with hot water and dried it and cleaned it then dried again until it was fully clean and cool to the touch as you'd expect on a normal day so hopefully should be ok, those 3M strips on the back are tough buggers

Facelift was 03 2010 and new idrive was 09 2008 but there were many unsold older ones around so loads of 09 cars don't have it.

Thanks. Were the changes in 03 2010 just cosmetic?
