BMW and M Power Owners

At close to £4k it becomes much more appealing - he will have given pennies for it so perfectly possible.

"One former keeper" needs clarified...as that sounds like two owners ( not that it makes much difference)

Drove the 530d 600 miles to Germany over the weekend. Soaked the miles up nicely and cruises well on the Autobahn :D

Where did you go in Germany and which route did you take? How did the car handle the journey? I'm going to Dresden in a few months, and I haven't booked my flights yet because my brother has said he'll give me his 530d for the trip. I'm still thinking about it taking the car vs flying.

Thanks :)

Edit: Two owners but the same family have owned it since new. They will only part-ex a car of lesser value which I guess is understandable.

Thought it'd be two owners, assume the same family stuff is probably ******** too

I wouldn't really expect then to take the m5 against it tbh - just keep in mind trade for it will be something like £1500 so they will not have paid much for the car at all

I am currently in Cologne. Went via Antwerp.

Car handled it well :)

I drove the 530i past Dresden a couple of years ago on my way to Prague and Budapest, that was cool too. Went via Dortmund.

Most unsurprising news ever.

Did 500 miles in the S2k last week. Soaked the miles up nicely.

:p

Sorry for basic question I could do a bit of googling but the BMW masters on this thread are a bit quicker!
Does a BMW Auto Box use a clutch that is subject to replacement as the clutch wears just like a manual clutch? Would BMW extended warranty cover replacement? Anyone here got this particular T-shirt?
Thanks.

Automatic gearboxes do not have clutches, they have torque converters instead.

Automated manual boxes have clutches but only SMG and DCT bmw transmissions are of this type.

Thankyou Fox. SMG and DCT??? What are they?

Yeah Sport mode isn't too viable in this weather, even in 2nd when rolling, a little bit of throttle causes DSC to kick in killing power. Modulating the pedal with it off is just better. Gently gently does it :p

The closest paddle based shifting experience you will get to a manual. As in the gear change still feels quite raw and race car like. :D

For me DCT/SMG is my favourite kind of transmission, still the interaction like a manual with lightning fast shift speeds and you have full control, bounce of limiter etc.

Though latest versions of DSG/PDK Sports Plus now also let you drive in full manual mode so will bounce of limiter etc and select any gear you want as long as rpm is available.

mrk How are you finding the e46 in terms of rigidity? Do you feel the flex and 'wobbliness' with it being a soft top?

Do you have a hard top for it?

It is a beautiful car BTW! :D

All will be answered soon in a dedicated thread I've already written up but need to take photos for :)

But to quickly answer your question, under spirited driving on twisty but rough roads you can feel some flex in the body due to no fixed roof. It's not much and it's certainly not enough to cause unbalance. I found it to cause me to be more alert and aware of what's going on. Maybe some will find this handy but I understand others don't like this. I'm not on either side and just accept that it is what it is. At straight line speeds and smooth roads I can't feel much difference.

I did have the hardtop but sold it. I think the hardtop makes the E46 look better than the coupe in fact but I bought a convertible to be able to drop the roof at a moment's notice so the hardtop was never really going to stick around. 2 or 3 times yearly applications of softtop preserver will ensure the soft top remains in good condition.

Plus it saves some weight :p

I look forward to the upcoming thread! :D

I had a e36 evo cabby that was very wobbly with the soft top, I don't know if it was a placebo effect but it felt a lot better with the hard top on, but as you say it is a PITA for when you want to go topless. :)

I am sure the e46 is a vast improvement over that though and it is such a stunner even today, just a modern classic IMO and the example you have is superb!

Dude the hard top is fugly, all round and bulbous at the rear, higher than coupe roof line, doesn't have the signature hofmeister kink. Rubbish.

No way, it looks better than the coupe!
