BMW and M Power Owners

Been out and about this week and had a little drive home from Oldham tonight. Ignore the start time as I filled up on the way in to the office at a petrol station about 1 mile away, but based on what the trip computer is showing I'd see over 700 miles from a tank on a long run which is pretty decent. Am seeing well over 500 most times as well even with shorter journeys included.

I own an e46 318i lovely car, but insurance is quite a kick in the teeth for a 19 year old at £1700 per annual but i don't regret paying it :)

1700!! I think I was paying nearly 2k for my 325i when I was 18, those were the days! Sure I got fleeced but unlike the youth of today there were no black boxes...

Why are there no manual E39 540i's? :(

Oil light (yellow) came on for the first time whilst driving the other day, first time that's happened in the E46, it's only ever been after I've switched off that it's appeared before.

That's my contribution to this thread today.

:p

I know it's totally irrational and petty, but it really, really bugs me!

Curb your pettiness with kerbs :D

I think I may need to change my MAF on my E46 at some point, recently been getting a smell of fuel in the car when pushing on a little bit, and the car runs exactly the same with the MAF plugged in as it does when it's unplugged. I need to get it plugged in and log some readings to confirm though.

Got a scratchy, almost grinding noise for a split second when I fire up the E46 on a cold start in the mornings.

Starter motor on its way out? Should I change it early?

Why are there no manual E39 540i's? :(

There are, they are just fairly rare as it was an unpopular engine and gearbox choice. The 540i was an autobahn bruiser which suited an autobox well - the M5 filled the 'big V8 drivers car' choice and the better handling 530i was more popular as a manual.

It's not that I mind it being an auto, but trying to minimize the cost of potential repairs would point me towards the manual.

Are the auto boxes that unreliable Fox? As an auto would be much (relatively speaking) easier to find.

The V8 6sp boxes are worth a pretty penny these days because of that.

Reading up on it, it looks like the E39 535i is mostly pointless too, and the M5 comes coupled with more than double the purchase price and running costs, along with VANOS issues and such.

They are not chronically unreliable but they are a point of failure and they are old cars.

If you want a manual buy a 530i, easier to find, slightly sharper to drive. Though if reliability is a concern don't even bother, these cars are now so old that they are bound to go wrong with semi frequently regularity sadly. And it's not so much the expense more the total irritation and annoyance of yet something else not working.

Or is this another one of those arbitrary 'OMG ITCH TO SCRATCH1111' purchases? :p

Well... it is coming up to a full year with the 330Ci haha.

I guess I'm looking at it from the point of view that I could change for pretty much no cost and then take the hit on the increased running costs.

The 530i would be a good shout but if I'm going to be dealing with the faff of the E39's potential issues, I might as well have a burbling V8 in front of me rather than the M54 engine (which, I'd have had three times if I go down that route). Not that it's a bad engine, of course, just familiar now.

Perhaps I'll just continue to tidy up my 330Ci and keep the money. Was just a passing thought :( nothing like a Fox post to bring us down to Earth :D

Just keep the E46 my 523 has needed a water pump, radiator and aux belt if it was a more expensive mint example 530i it would have bothered me but I replaced the bits myself but it's a massive weak point on the e39 not so much on the e46 afaik...

Must admit the E39 is bloody comfortable compared to the E46!

I'd like something a bit more comfy I guess - but I'd also like it a little more modern. There's no E60 car that I'd entertain and the F10 is too expensive really.

Well with spring coming its' finally time to say goodbye to my 335i (09) Convertible.

Can't believe I've had her for 4 years, it been a great car but it's time to move on while there still a decent amount of value left in the car. A car that is just effortlessly quick, and with the tin folding roof makes owning a convertible practical and fun.

Going to get a nice valet done and then take some pics and get them up on Pistonheads and Autotrader. They do seem to be relatively rare, on Autotrader there is literally a handful of cars for sale of my year/spec.

Not really in any rush, luckily I have another car that I can use once I've sold it so I can take my time to choose my new ride (also work bonus in May)

QUESTION?

I was tempted to get the 313 alloy wheels refurbed as all of them are pretty bad cosmetically (kerbing) but I don't know whether this would really put people off, I would just knock the cost of refurb off the price. Sods law would be if I get them refurbed before I sell I will go out the same afternoon and clip and damn kerb!!!
