BMW and M Power Owners

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Can it be added with a firmware update?

Had an 'overheating' error appear yesterday after about 30 minutes driving and then a few minutes later 'overheated'. (Oil temp was fine).

Turned out to be a coolant airlock.

Vid/Snip

I could have sworn I read BMW's used sealed/closed coolant circuits, sparking some debate, so checking water levels was never on the 'to do' list. Emergency Service came out within half an hour and had it cleared shortly after.

Just curious how an airlock can develop? I've not opened the water cap since owning the vehicle (over a year) so unless when it had an oil service and MOT two weeks ago they've topped it up and trapped some air in there? Quite a bit came out...

The water pump is working fine and was continuously pumping once the air was cleared. My local Indy thinks it could be the thermostat.

Has anyone had this before or something similar?

I'd keep an eye on this. I don't think it is the airlock. When my water pump needing replacing it would suddenly after about 10 miles of driving go from a steady 90c, to then feeling the air from the vents suddenly going cold and water temp steadily going up to around 120c followed by it then saying it was overheating. All I had to do was stop the engine and restart it and the temperature would suddenly fall back down to 90c and I'd be fine for the remainder of my journey, however long it was.

It's almost like the water pump would just suddenly stop, then when the engine had been restarted it would kick back to life and work fine again. Strange symptoms but fixed with a new water pump, which are common items to fail.

Yep, just checked my coolant on my lunch despite refilling it this morning and it's dropped.

Turned it over and could see the pump working with the cap off but the radiator fan kicked in almost immediately :/

Edit: A bit of googling as also revealed I might have some contamination/carbon build up on the valves as I get some lumpy power delivery when pulling away semi-regularly and have noticed decreased economy recently too. Anyone experience similar with the N55?

All sorted on Extended Warranty. New Thermostat & Waterpump :)

Winched away Wednesday evening and I picked it up Friday afternoon.

Going to change the waterpump and auxilliary belts on my car (330d auto). It looks fairly straightforward apart from the fan removal which requires a specific tool.

I've been recommended by a mechanic friend (who runs an independent BMW specialist garage and previously worked for BMW for 15 years) to use OEM belts. I have an aftermarket alternator belt on the car at the moment that makes a horrible squealing noise from cold. Is it best to just buy them from BMW or will somewhere like GSF sell OEM?

I managed to get my fan off pretty easily with a whopping big spanner and a screwdriver - you can get the tool which would make life a bit easier, but it can be done without :)

I swapped my belts with Contitech ones from ECP, did the trick and haven't had a single squeel since they were done.

So, car has gone into today for its replacement bootlid. Got a lovely Citroen DS3 1.4 diesel courtesy car.

Probed them a little about how the work would be done and turns out they wont be blending the bootlid into the wings. Not sure if this is due to the fact its being done on the corrosion warranty or not, but guess we'll see how it turns out.

The other interesting bit was that they stated the E92 M3 lip spoiler is no longer available from BMW (i.e not manufactured), so I guess we'll see if they can get mine off without damaging it.

Ugh. Went to pick the car up today, only to find that the spoiler had paint runs in it, someone has fixed the number plate on while the paint was too soft (marking the boots new paint) and the rear badge is sitting way proud of where it should be.

I honestly cannot believe it passed some sort of inspection in that state. Left it with them.

Did you do the water pump too? Is it as straight forward as youtube makes it out to be?
I've had the main crank shaft pulley and belt replaced recently, so I think it's just the water pump belt and AC belt left. Am I right in thinking the water pump belt is also the same belt for the alternator? or is that the crankshaft belt?

The tool makes things nice and easy, although I'll admit to not having tried it without. All it does is hold the waterpump in place whilst you unscrew the fan.

So I decided to get my car mapped by superchips. Initially the car seemed low on power after I drove off but I thought I'd let it sort it's self out plus I had crappy fuel from the supermarket in. Took it for a run and went through the gears, initial thoughts? Car pulls much better lower down, you can feel the extra torque which I wanted. Higher up the Rev range it just keeps pulling and pulling. Where as before it seemed to bog down after 5k revs.

The power delivery is much smoother and the flat spots seem to be gone. It's a much better drive I'm glad I have done it as the car seems to have responded well to it.
