BMW and M Power Owners

Around the £6k'ish budget, I'd probably pick up a VW Golf, you should be able to get a 2.0 TDI with Sav Nav and other toys for that sort of money.

Looking at petrols though. But I do agree. I wouldn't be buying an almost poverty spec, older BMW 1 series just because it's a BMW.

She could get a nice Golf GTI for that money :

They both are reasonably low miles, and have leather. Should be able to pick them up for around the £6k mark I would think. If something like SatNav is a must for you, retrofitting is a reasonably cheap option on these. Certainly easy and cheap enough to not have to wait on one with it factory fitted.

No different to buying designer handbags and clothes though is it? 9 times out of 10 you can get a better quality non designer item for considerably less, but that doesn't stop people buying them. It's not where my money would go, but I can totally understand why people do it.

Buying an 11 year old hatch for 6k is not no different to buying a designer hand bag, no. A designer handbag does not have on going maintenance costs associated with it. An 11 year old car like this is going to look and feel tired.

He was on about the thought process behind the purchase. Not everyone considers all of the potential costs and what feels tired to an enthusiast is often not noticed by 90% of people.

Exactly - she'll probably neither know nor care that she hasn't got the best value for money car it's possible to get. Anyway, it's an old 1 series, not a CL600, it's not going to cost vastly more to run than a Focus.

I'd argue that it does in the form of raised expectations and stroppy tantrums when their friend friend's hubby invariably buy something more expensive than theirs.

If it was 3k then fair enough but come on, 6k for an 11 year old hatch? That's just nonsense. It's over priced.

Even a good example of the first 1 Series wasn't a great car!

Had it towed to my local Indy ready for tomorrow. The RAC man said its the water pump. He filled up the coolant and it was leaking straight out again.

That is rather irritating. I've got the receipt for the pump if it helps however it's over a year old now, so I guess any attempts at claiming on warranty will fall on deaf ears :( Thankfully the pump is quite a cheap part.

To us, yes.

To your average Joe..."IT'S A BMW" :cool::cool::cool:

Oh, I totally agree - I'd never buy one myself. But at the same time, I totally understand why some people (particularly women) will pay over the odds for an inferior product because it's got a particular badge stuck on it. Surely this is not a new concept to you? :p

But this is a forum of people who like cars and discuss cars. Which is what I am doing. I'm not stupid, I'm quite aware that people do this sort of thing and I know why they do it, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to point out how much of a ridiculous idea it is to spend £6k on a 2004 1 Series just because it's a BMW. It's neither a good BMW nor a good hatchback, really. Especially not at £6000 which buys far better cars.

This would be a fairly dull place if every single post was replied to with 'I UNDERSTAND THAT SOME PEOPLE MIGHT DO THAT'.

Just because somebody is female doesn't mean they cannot understand logic and reason when it's presented to them. It's probably in his interest to help her understand that she can do much better for her money (even if she wants 'A BMW LOL').

Yeah bit odd! It's ok, wasn't too expensive. All sorted now and seems to be fine. :)

I used to save over £120 a month in fuel --maybe even more since-- in the old car due to commuting by foot. I still commute that way yet:

Guess once the novelty of foot down = grin wears down things might improve :p

I agree, but she wants a 1 series. Personally i wouldn't be going for one but she wants something a bit smarter than the 10 year old Fords and Peugeots shes been driving since she passed her test.

It hasn't got any cool gadgets or toys in it really, but from what shes used to, heated seats and parking sensors are like something out of Star Trek:D

I had a go my self in the 2ltr version and it handled quite well and looks like its been cared for.

After talking about it, she doesn't want a VW or an Audi, Ford or Peugeot, she was open to a Honda Civic but after driving one she went off them.

Now shes set on the 1 Series ive just got to try and find her the best example of one i can find in her budget. The SE version we looked at at the weekend has been the best so far.

Thing is, when goes to put the pushchair in the boot in a couple of years and says its to small, at least ill get to say i told you should have got a 3 series/estate:p

That seems expensive to me, but knock some more off for the warranty at least. A years warranty on a 2004 car wont be worth the premium and you'll know where you stand.
