Take that back!
Given that he owns an e46 m3...tongue firmly in cheek.
Take that back!
Speaking of e46...
I've had mine a little over 2 months now, the more I drive it and the more I get to know it, the more I'm enjoying it. It is obviously very different coming from an S2000, but thankfully the S54 shares the willingness to rev of the S2000 whilst being an altogether more interesting engine when not at the top end of the rev range.
SMG has it quirks but given the slating it often receives I was expecting it to be much less competent than it's proven to be. It is obviously more agricultural than the newest dual clutch boxes or even the ZF8 slush boxes, you need to modulate the throttle more as you would with a manual box but it's fast and responsive both up and down the box and will happily slush around town.
As an all round package it's just been excellent really, it's comfortable and economical on a run, it's well enough equipped to not feel overly outdated (discovering the FreeView TV was a highlight), it's fast when you want it to be and is entertaining down a twisty road.
Exterior wise the e46 doesn't look dated when seen in isolation.
Next to an e90 or f30 however it's a different story.
It's a cracking M3 none the less.
E46 M3; what should I be on the lookout for when I go view one to help steer clear of the money pits?
They're getting on a bit now so obvious signs of rust, especially around wheel arch and door mirrors. If the SMG pump, clutch, salmon relay, subframe have all been done what else is there to look for, on the car and in an abundance of receipts? It had an inspection 1 towards the end of May 2015.
Angel eyes, depo side lights, spoilers, carbon interior trim, replica wheels, spacers, coil overs, LEDzzz, stance, wrapped bits, tablets in the dash and fake CSL diffusers, bumpers and boot lids.

Thanks, OcUK motors proves a fount of knowledge once again
I was being serious. These are old cars now and a lot of them have been through the mill so find a nice standard car that's got a full and comprehensive service history and you'll be fine. They are pretty robust really. If you get a 2004 car it'll have the 14 year paint/corrosion warranty which will cover the arches should they rust (providing it's never had a shunt or any new paint). Late 2005/2006 cars will still be covered by BMW goodwill repair if the subframe is cracked.
So as those of you who came to the southern meet know I sold my M3 on the same day in anticipation of putting money down on some new gen metal
Well I placed my deposit today and everything is finalised, BMW M4 factory order incoming, provisional late september delivery date.
Excited...
