BMW and M Power Owners

Taking my driving test soon and my mate is looking to sell his 2006 BMW 1 Series M sport. Its a 2 litre diesel with 150k+ on the clock.

What sort of price would that realistically be, given the age and mileage, and more importantly as a first time driver (over 25yrs old) would the insurance make this a unrealistic option?

I read into the coding for Fxx cars, seems simple enough.

Just wondering about the cable, its just an ethernet cable, OBD2 port, and a resistor essentially, so this should do the trick should it not?

Otherwise they seem to be around £20-£30 on ebay

Back when I got my 530d I done the research, and got the F-Net cable that was most recommended on the bimmerpost F10 / F30 forum. IIRC it came from Poland, and was around £35-40. Can't remember the specifics.

In the end though, I am too terrified of messing up my, what was then brand new, motor, and it's sat doing nothing since. Might break it out once the warranty runs out (although I will no doubt be extending it, if I still have it next christmas).

Insurance is likely bad but only you can quote for your circumstances. Borrow his reg and give a compare website a go. Can you afford the upkeep of this car being 10 years old? There will be a lot cheaper options to insurance and run as a first timer unless money isn't an issue for you in which case I'd probably still buy something that wasn't this.

Seeing as he is over 25 I assume insurance would be fairly reasonable. I'd expect at least less than £1k for first year.

Expect insane insurance.

The annoying thing is, regardless of having 5+ years NCB on my bike policies, all insurance companies looked at me as though I was a day one scrub on the roads. And as a result, I got really, REALLY bad deals. Shockingly bad, it's day light robbery.

I was a first time driver at 25 (biker), insurance has gone down drastically for me in a short space of time however.

In my first year, I went from a MX5 Mk1 to a BMW 130i M sport. The insurance absolutely ***** me over. £3k a year.

So yea, prepare your diddly hole.

Haha, I feel the same way thinking about it, knowing my luck i'll screw it up somehow. All i want is a bloody digital speedo readout!

I hate my Saab.

This means that I've been looking into what car I might change it for for some time. I'm not meant to be changing it until next May or so. However, on Sunday, I noticed a nice E39 530i in Imola red, manual gearbox etc etc on the Tree of Gums. I almost wanted to see it but for the fact that the seller was blatantly a filthy liar and was a trader masquerading as private (his name was Cindy, he'd owned the car for 12 years and could barely string a sentence together in English). I sighed and left it at that.

Then, out of the blue, I despondantly typed '330i' into eBay search, and a car came up ~100 miles away. It looked good. I went to look at it, and here's the deal:

- E46 330i M Sport
- Titanium Silver (bored with silver cars, but this was too good)
- Manual gearbox
- Heated black leather
- Xenons
- Michelin Pilot Sports
- 100K miles
- 4 previous owners
- Fullish S/H (current owner's done a couple of oil services/an inspection 2 since buying it himself)
- Lots of bills
- Recent radiator, expansion bottle, VANOS seals, rocker cover gasket, suspension work, front discs & pads, DIY inspection 2, spark plugs etc etc.

This car was better than the one my brother-in-law bought 18 months ago for £3800. We shook on £2.4k. The only thing that bothers me are a couple of very, very minor rust scabs on the rear arches and a little in the driver's door shut. There's also a ding on the N/S/R arch (exactly the same as my brother-in-law's car when he bought it).

I've looked at 7 or 8 E46s over the last few years, and none were as good as this at my budget (or up to ~£4k). I'm stoked, and can't wait to not have to drive my woefully dull Saab again.

But according to OcUK Saab's are amazing and wonderful?

IainD? :p

330i sounds great!

I will always be the first in the queue to dissuade potential Saab 9-3 SS/SC owners from making the same mistake I did! Can't speak for 9-5s, but I assume they're just as boring/soulless.

I remember being about an hour into my journey home after picking my Saab up, and thinking 'I've made quite a mistake here'.

Oi I very rarely stick my head into this thread and my name's being taken in vain!

I like 'em, plenty dont. I'd never say they're amazing for everyone but I'll stand up for their upsides :)

I like the 93's especially the 2.8T versions, I was actually close to purchasing a carlsson one but I decided not too.

330i sounds like a good buy tbh, not a bad price either.

From my experience, there are good ones and bad ones but they certainly aren't as nice as a good e39. Nothing is :p I don't think I'd buy another 9-3SS but it served it's purpose for me while I had one.

The 9-5 is meant to be a far superior car though.
