BMW and M Power Owners

Was the fluid actually low?

Probably just be either the actual handbrake switch or fluid level sensor in the cap (you did replace the cap...?)

Aye it did look a little low, added a few cap fulls then a dribble but maybe that wasn't quite enough.

I'll check again tomorrow in the light as it was dark and she had annoyed the **** out of me because the pussy cat had a tiny cut under her eye

Check the level is within the min Max tomorrow then add a caliper to your list of bits and pieces to sort too, I assume that's where it's lost fluid. Refurb kit including piston is quite cheap if you are happy to take the time with it (I usually just replace the caliper tbh)

Jacked up each wheel today to check for play and noticed on the rear near side there was a damp thing. Not sure if it was a brake pipe or ARB.

Will deal with the other things first and see where the problem lies!

Do you have an Android phone or an iPhone? If android you can get a cheap bluetooth OBD2 scanner (I had this one and it worked fine on my E46 + many other cars) and use the free app "Torque" to read and clear the codes. If you have an iPhone then you'll need a more expensive Wi-Fi based reader (something about iOS that means it can't use Bluetooth devices for anything other than audio/phonecalls), but I don't have experience of those myself.

Ordered the Wi-Fi version as that does all platforms it seems - hopefully it will work :) Thanks

Good to know you have a "damp thing" under your car, but you can't tell if it's a brake line or ARB, two, very different things. :p

**** off! I was having a quick look under in the dark!

It was also wet making choices so much harder..... Will report back.

Replaced the rocker cover gasket but couldn't get my fan off. Frustrating

Exhaust manifold managed to somehow fry itself on the trip to Poland and take a handful of electronics with it along the way... yeyyyy

Not sure exactly what happened but having a wife's cousin's husband look at it lol.

Hopefully Bernie will live a bit longer.

Although I may have already lined up a handful of E92 M3s to look at...

If it's anything like the E46 then yes, the fan and shroud need to come out together, however they're not attached so keep hold of both of them.

Ordered the tool at BMW today, thought the guy would be able to look up the part but had to look it out for him. £18 or so, hopefully pick it up tomorrow and get on with it. Can't even service the Astra as the weather is crap!

Had a hand from the cat.

Bottom right corner looks worse than the rest assuming this is where it was leaking.

With the cover off the only damage I found was this. It wasn't as brittle as I expected with the spark plug bits still being flexible. I think one of the bolts wasn't as tight as the rest too.

How clean I could get it before replacing the cover.

I scrubbed up the cover and broke off all the harder parts I could. The vanos bit looks a bit manky to me.

After a quick drive I still had a few spots of oil on the previously wiped wing. I panicked but it's possibly from the fan still having some on it as I wiped it and took it a more spirited drive and it was still clean.

When I replaced my gasket it had hardened quite badly, it wasn't totally brittle like they can sometimes get but had turned more like plastic than rubber.

Mine was leaking at the back of the engine above the exhaust manifold which filled the cabin with a smell of burning oil through the vents.

So my MyCarly Gen II Bluetooth adaptor arrived today, going to see what fun things I can play with on my 550i, not sure what there is to unlock but I'll have a look see anyway. The adaptor is quite cute, little & white with an on/off switch... Should work well for any future F series I might swap to.

A few pictures of my recent purchase:

520d Touring in Carbon Black.

Extras are Xenons, HUD, Folding mirrors. Standard options include DAB and auto tailgate.

Things I wish it had are ambient lighting and a 3 litre engine but I will run it for a couple of years and enjoy it over the Qashqai :).

Defeated by my old BMW at the moment. Have taken off coolant hoses to help give some space to get the fan off but still no luck.

Have soaked it in penetrating oil and will get an adjustable spanner tomorrow, hoping the wider jaws will help hold the other brace in place.

What's actually happening with it? I wouldn't use an adjustable in anything you're actually trying to undo - it'll be fine if it's just the holding nut

I used to use a long spanner of the right size (alternatively slip some tubing over the current one if it's smallish), a rubber mallet and a few swings on the e36

The brace from bmw only fits in so many ways, it will hold and then slip off the water pump pulley bolts before the fan nut cracks.

I'm using a bicycle headset spanner so it is rather thin which allows the brace to move I guess.
