BMW and M Power Owners

Same on E93 and F10.

And on the e39 and e38.

Feeling a lot happier about my e39 today, arrived at work early to specifically get the workshop foreman (who isn't a fitter!) to have a look at my e39, it's got a knocking sound coming from the engine, you can hear it from the drivers side but not the passenger side, turns out I've got a slight crack in my cam cover (which is plastic, hadn't realised that!) and the knocking noise is air escaping from the crack, he's not so sure about the mayo on its oil filler cap though, I cleaned it thoroughly at the weekend and more has appeared already, it's coolant is still clear and the level hasn't dropped but it's bothering me that it's suddenly started to leave this mayo on the filler cap....

I'm considering selling it but on the other hand reluctant to do so as it's currently running beautifully, seems to have cured its old power loss issue by itself (!) - I'm very much torn as to what to do with it.

Did you miss my post? Mine has had that for almost 10 years.

No, I saw it and replied, what bothers me greatly is its started to do this all of a sudden, I cleaned the filler cap last weekend and it's already back, if anything more build up than before, maybe the crack in the cam cover is causing it but the chap looking at it today thought it unlikely it would build up so quickly without a source of moisture getting in,yes a crack in the cam cover would let air / moisture in but no where near enough to cause this build up so quickly, he thinks there is another bigger source of moisture getting into the engine - namely a failing head gasket....

The use of the car hasn't changed, the oil is still fairly fresh, it bothers me that it's developed within the last week and seems to be getting worse.

A lot of the trucks at work have slight build up of mayo in the oil filler pipe, it's quite normal so long as it returns slowly, over say a month and a few thousand miles of running, not in less than a week and a couple of hundred miles covered, he said himself that yes, cars differ from trucks but fundamentally cooling systems and failing ones don't when all said & done, same principles albeit smaller scale.

I'm not remotely precious about any car I've owned, but I can't honestly say I've ever noticed lifeless steering in mine and I've had a ferrari, two porsches, two subarus, an m3, a supra etc.. etc.. If you want to discuss a 'detached' steering feel, try the gtr, but even then you are still involved in the drive. You make it sound like driving the z4 is akin to using a console controller.

I might also add the z4m I drove didn't strike me as that much better, placebo?

Coming from an MX5, and wanting that genuinely sporty feeling, the steering in the 3.0 reminded me of that in my mothers Honda Jazz. I do not get that feeling in the M.

Scania is it in the oil breather pipe too?

Not checked that yet, should be interesting to see if it is, I had the breather replaced a few months back, I assume you mean the one that joins the cam cover near the VANOS solenoid?

If it is does it bode well or not?

I'm at work currently, il have a look when I get back to the car later...

Yes that's the one above the vanos line. I'd check that too, could be your ccv playing up but it normally does get like your oil cap because of moisture. Wondering if that's sludged up causing the cap to get like that.

Took it off and stuck my finger in, scarcely got it dirty there was that little residue in it, no sign of Mayo at all in the breather pipe, I hope this is a good sign!

Have you recently been doing a lot of short trips? Could be the current temps combined with that causing a build up. Take it for a long drive and see if that helps.

Just had both front and rear discs and pads replaced including sensors. Full service: Oil change, micro filter, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter. Down pipe clamp replaced as the old one had cracked Bleed nipple replaced as the old one had rounded. Also managed to get £300 discount from BMW dealership for the above service and items.

Seems like your ccv must be ok. You haven't got a crack In the oil cap or where it threads onto the rocker have you? M54 are known to have this but your sludge does seem a lot more then usual.

There is a small crack in the rocker cover, so small you can hardly see it, the filler cap looks ok, took it for a fast ~40mile drive last night giving it plenty of revs and the cap (which I wiped prior to leaving work) has gunk on it again, the coolant level is still spot on though and showing no sign of contamination....
