BMW and M Power Owners

Half a tank done so far in the 340i, love this engine, so eager to rev.
Did a 40 mile trip in eco pro mode and hovered around 40mpg which was nice(soon drops with any kind of traffic or acceleration).
Stop start tech is a bit keen at times.
Car is so quick, cant really imagine how fast a "proper" fast car is.

Stop using eco pro mode. Just stop it now. Bad lardy, bad!

I constantly find myself in eco pro mode. Most of the time I'm either following traffic, or sitting at a steady speed on the dualler / motorway. No need for sport mode there, so might as well save 1 mpg or whatever.

Just leave it it normal then you crazy fool! :p

I honestly hate eco pro - it just doesn't have that power when you might need it, and then when it does finally wake up it tells you off! Smug little ****!

I expect on the very infrequent long journeys I do I might use Eco pro mode. Otherwise probably not, comfort for school run, sport(or plus) when on my own. :)

Unsure of the differences between sport and sport+, other than traction control?

Don't quote me on this (quote Fox) but does it not also enable launch control?

Yeah, I could probably count fingers on one hand how often I've used Sport mode for anything other than a single overtaking maneuver.

Comfort mode does get used, at least initially. Then 1/2 mile down the road I'm sitting behind something travelling at an appropriate speed, and I just bang it into eco pro and be done with it.

But then, I have averaged near 40 mpg overall, and got 42k out of one of the front tyres and still has 4mm left (one got a bulge in it the other week, and the 2 rears were gubbed due to alignment issues, else it would be all 4). Also, according to iDrive, my discs and pads have been due in 3200 miles for about 15,000 miles now. For a 530d Touring that aint bad in my book.

Nah that's not too bad at all. I think though it highlights that the x28i engine is quite impressive - I never drive in Eco and average nearly 35mpg!

Not sure about that. I averaged about 32 mpg in my 1.8T Golf that would be 18 years old now. Ok, it had a fair bit less power than a x28i, but if in 18 years it's only gotten 3 mpg better fuel economy, it aint that hugely impressive.

If that was the average in an x35i / 40i engine I'd be impressed though. Although I suspect, like every other 6 cylinder engined motor I've owned, that engine will average sub 30 mpg, for me.

Despite that, that is a strong contender for my next engine (the 40i).

I've averaged over 34mpg in my M135i over 33k miles. Granted it's the smallest car the engine goes in, but I'm still mightily impressed with it!

Yeah, that's impressive, and why I looked at that engine next time. Only roughly 10 mpg less than a 520d. But with a blown petrol 6. Impressive indeed.

Went and had a look at an e93 m3 today. 59 plate so fair bit below what I had been looking at in terms of age and £££ but oh my life...WHAT A SHED!

Paintwork was in horrible condition. Doors full of door dings. Interior plastics scratched to hell with some serious gouges in them. Seats look like they'd had someone from hellraiser sat in them.

Much disappoint.

For the cost of putting those things right vs the value of the car I can't understand why the dealer hasn't. Makes no sense whatsoever!

You'd be getting rather more than just 44mpg if your usage profile was such that you got 34 from an M135.

To be honest, I would believe that absolutely. Sucked in by all the hype over real-world tales of 34mpg averages in the M135i.

However, I can confirm I did only average around 45mpg in the 520d over the 2 days / 200 miles I had that car the other week. Didn't drive it any differently to my 530d which I average 40 mpg in. I also recently had an X3 2.0 TDI manual (why???) and that only averaged 36mpg over the 120 or so miles I had that.

I suspect, if I do indeed go for a 340i, that my long term average will be closer to the 25-28 mpg that I have had out of every other 6 cylinder petrol I have ever owned / driven.

I am a little gutted though. When I was in BMW on Friday sorting out a quote for a 340i, they had a M5 sitting there. Apparently they had it a while, but they sold it while I was there. £25k discount (from a £81k list). I suspect with that sort of discount on that particular car (not pre-registered or anything), the payments might not have been a huge amount more than on my 530d. Now if the guy had said from the start that was the sort of discount available, I'd have asked him to quote it up.

Yeah - I'd be surprised it you only got 44mpg from a 320d driving like that... most like 50+

I get 55+ on a longer motorway run from a 2004 E46 320d, 50 combined... over 600 from a tank usually, a shade over 700 when doing runs to/from the UK.
