BMW and M Power Owners

Just gave the Eventuri a clean and noticed a high pitched noise from the engine bay when you first start the car up. Seems to disappear after a short while. Anyone got a clue what it might be?

Secondary air pump? I don't know if the S54 has one, but you can hear it on the E39. Depends exactly on the kind of noise and volume.

Video of the noise?

The S54 makes a million different noises at each stage of a startup, 99% of them are normal :p

I'll get a video tomorrow if my phone records it alright. Yeh random noise you have to get used to with this engine but I don't remember this being one I've heard before when I've had the bonnet open.

The Germans don't banter like they used to :p

Top bants that.

Just tried to record the noise but you can't hear it over the normal random noises this engine makes when cold (bag of spanners being thrown down stairs during an earthquake)

If people are still going to the piston heads meet this month I can show it then.

So my E60 has started to tell me that my rear brake pads need replacing soon. When I took the car earlier for its service the mechanic said it was still ok and had decent amount left. My question is does the car have any other indicators for pad wear or is the iDrive accurate when it says 600km left for example?

I don't want to get to the point where I'm wearing on the discs and would like to know if I need to book it in ASAP for the discs or I'm ok for longer?

Hmm which PH meet date is that? I only know of Ace Cafe M power meet on Christmas Eve!

If the warning is just in the Idrive I think that is just what the car has predicted as being time to change the pads based on time and distance traveled. If the warning is in the instrument cluster then the physical pad wear sensors have been triggered. I think that is how it works but some one like Fox will confirm i'm sure.

Look at the pads? You will be able to see how much life they have left in them from looking through the wheel.

This is what I am hoping, as the iDrive system has always been a bit off in terms of reporting distance or times remaining.

I presume the system works the same way as the F10 does but I cannot guarantee it.

On the F10, it counts down using an assumed wear rate until it hits about 2200 miles and sits there until the first stage pad wear sensor is triggered. Then it resumes its countdown to zero.

At some point the traditional main wear sensor will trigger and illuminate a separate warning on the dash.

Ok that seems consistent fox, i did notice it sat at around 3000kms for a while and not its showing around 600kms.

Is it better to book it in now or wait till the dash light comes on?
