Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

That's from extensive experience in kerbing a wheel or two numerous times while paying attention to not kerbing the other wheel.
Can't see what your tyres are like for protecting the rims

But these F1 tyres i have on my wheels have saved my rims from being damaged multi times..:)

Oh there is rim protection, not as wide as your photos show, but a lot of kerbs are pretty sharp, and just cut right through the rim protector!

Does anybody drive there M3 with the roof down in the kind of weather? Does anybody even drive it all?

Ive parked mine up and not driven for 1 month now, dont really see the point in cold weather ;)

Convertibles in cold weather can be great fun provided they've got heated seats and a good heater.

The only convertible I've ever been in was my mates MX-5. He picked me up from Leeds to drive back to Wales and when he pulled up the bloody roof was down, it was about -5 :o Drove back over the Peak District (snake pass?) with a few feet of snow at the side of the road. Heaters and seats to max, it was thoroughly enjoyable :D

I don't drive my M3 with the roof down because I'm not a hairdresser.

And I drive it nearly every day! Why do you not see the point in driving it when it's cold??

I have a few nights already, and regularly drive in this weather anyway, same as last year.

No problems at all. The heaters in the E46 are very good, and the cocoon of warm air that you're surrounded by with the roof down but windows up is perfectly fine for driving around in. I don't have heated seats, nice to have, but not essential due to the above.

Glorious sound there mrk - also of topic, I heard there's a great oriental tailors in Winchester *cough* :p

Never understood heated seats, feels like you've developed incontinence every time you switch them on, not for me.

Heated seats, for when you want that “have I just wet myself?” feeling :p

I would really like an air scarf though, that is one feature of some convertibles that really is excellent and genuinely useful.

Don’t know about the tailor in Winchester, my tailor is in Portsmouth, also an oriental though! Maybe a joke gone way over my head?!

Unless its raining or snowing and I'm doing less then 60 then the roof is down in mine. Payed extra for the ability to drive with it down so I will make the most of it, and being England that means the 90% of the time when its cold/wet.

The looks you get when its hammering it down and you sat with the roof down on the motorway completely dry are worth it alone...

I've noticed that 99% of the time the only people who say this are the people who don't actually have heated seats. I had a colleague who used to say this all the time, then he got a Volvo that had them and was instantly converted.

I wouldn't have a car without heated seats now - they're lovely on a cold morning. Even my Mini has them and that's primarily for track fun :D

I have heated seats in both the Z4 and 535d and have had them in my Audi S6, Mercedes S430 and a string of other cars and I can honestly say I just do not use them as I find them uncomfortable.

Sometimes on absolutely freezing cold mornings I'll pop it on for a moment while I de-ice the screen or something but I would turn them off as soon as I sat in the car.

I do the same with my heated steering wheel (sometimes I'll leave that on if I have the roof down and it is particularly cold...)

I have had the heated seats on mine on but i dont have them on maximum. I just use my peugeot 206 in this weather, like to keep my mileage down on the m3...only has 55k.

I've been in and driven plenty of cars with heated seats, while they're nice initially, they soon get a bit too ott and makes you feel odd. Some luxury cars use fans to circulate hot air through the seats as opposed to the wet pants feeling associated with heating elements in a pad below the leather. The air based ones would be much nicer to have.

But overall, I genuinely couldn't give a monkeys about having heated seats, it wasn't a tick box on my want list then, and still isn't, because it really isn't an essential item. Nappa leather warms to body heat near instantly. I can't speak for other cars/models though.

Maybe some people need to man up more :p
