Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

If there are options not fitted to my car, I NEVER WANTED THEM ANYWAY AS THEY SUCK.

Heated seats an Internet hype item? Unbelievable.

We live in England. Being able to sit in your freezing car and have your whole seat warm up almost instantly is definitely not 'hype'!

The comments above in this thread about how amazing heated seats are.

I don't see any over the top or hype comments? I just see people saying they really like them?

Again, you could replace seats with mirrors - both are nice things to have and you definitely notice them when you don't have them, for 99% of people anyway!

Anyway, did I read somewhere on here that you spent £10k on maintenance on the M3? Or did I misread it? I was meaning to ask what cost so much.

Also, you don't drive everyday do you? So I guess your requirements are different to most people.

I thought this much was blindingly obvious given the contents of this thread? :p

I don't get what's so hard to understand for some people, heated seats was never an item I cared about, if they were, I'd have chosen a car that had them, or bought heated seat elements and the switchgear panel and fitted them myself. What's a bit more cost on top of what I've already spent on the car to get it to how I like it?!

If I wanted it, I'd have had it.

Not really true though is it, buying a used car is a compromise - we often have to go without things we'd want to get a car in the right condition or at the right price. I certainly have every time I've bought a car, so the idea that you made a conscious decision to pick a car with zero fitted equipment is just nonsense, nobody does that, it was just what happened to be the spec of the car that came up.

I've had heated seats in all my cars, Mondeo, MX-5 and Cayman. In my MX-5 and Cayman, I do get that 'wet' feeling but only if the heated seats are at max. In the lowest setting, it's awesome and it doesn't take long to heat up anyway. I don't know why people would not want it if given the choice. One of my friends swore by it in his MX-5, I don't recall a time when his heated seats weren't on.

I found a car that was in stock format, had only dealer and M3 only specialist history, had an interior condition that I have not seen in another E46 to date (this was the most important factor).

Sure, I saw it had no heated seats and questioned the kind of person that buys a new convertible and doesn't spec it, but that's where such thoughts ended.

I have driven with the roof down in colder conditions than what we've been having this week, and not once have I thought "damn, wish this thing actually had heated seats". It just does not matter to me one bit to be an issue.

And like I said, if it did, then I'd just buy the elements off 2nd hand seats, the switch panel from BMW and fit it myself in an afternoon.

Exactly the same arguments I used to use against heated seats when I didn't have them. Now I do, I'd not be without them and most of what I said was probably just me trying to convince myself.

I think I've used my heated seats 3 times, mainly to check they actually worked, and pretty much not used them since, so I wouldn't miss them.

However, having been in the e class merc cabriolet and audi s5 recently, both had airscarf and better heating than the e46, with the merc's electric wind deflectors being pretty awesome too..

Yeah if the E46 came with optional air scarf, then I wouldn't have rested until I found one with it specced. It's such a great option on cars that do have it.

That's you though, I'm not you :p

I tend to stick to my guns when I know what I want.

I use my heated seats every time I get in the car in autumn and winter. If I have leather then it's a must have option. No iffs and no buts. If the car doesn't have it then I won't buy it.

I didnt have them in my first z4 and as I had yet to have them I never really missed them but I would have liked them in it. So when I got the M it was the one option I wanted. Use them most days now and wouldn't get a car with out them now. Leather is just soo cold some mornings.

Lots of Z4s don't have them as they are speced as sumer cars to go for a drive in when it's 18 degrees + so no need for them. Why both my Z4s had 25k~ miles on them after 7/9 years.

We have Nissan pickups at work with heated seats but I don't like them at all.

In my mx5 I have them on a lot. Always for the first few minutes when it's cold. I didn't expect to use them much, but I'm pleased I bought a car with them. I wouldn't have retrofitted them

Not sure if the Mazda ones are just better or if there is some psychological reason that my own car is better than a shared one.
Just like I prefer my coffee cup to anyone else's.

The heated seats stay on after you turn off the ignition in the Audi. The only time they're off is usually on the way back from work if I leave in the afternoon and forget they're on :p

It has 6 settings, but I'm not sure what 1-5 actually do..

Since having heated seats in the Saabmobile I doubt I will ever buy another car ever again without them.

There's nothing better than firing the engine up on a crisp winter morning (I leave the house at 6 am, so it can get quite cold!), activating the heated seats and driving off.

Now, heated steering wheel would have been nice ..."I could have it if I wanted it blah blah switchgear etc.," :p
