I’ve no issue with a penalty for anyone if the car is illegal, but saying that there was such a low margin of error because it was likely broken annoys me. If you’re acknowledging that there’s damage there and it’s already passed the static test then throw the investigation out.

They are using a go / no-go gauge which is essentially a zero tolerance approach. If the gauge passes through the gap then the test is failed, providing the applied force is less than 10N.

They always claim to treat everyone equally but if your the fastest car in a straight line and your competitors are kicking up a fuss about your rear wing then maybe its less likley to be accepted as damage and instead the wing is taken away for inspection.

Every team is in a fight for a position in the constructors championship, so any decision by the FIA has repercussions - I'd expect Ferrari vs McLaren to have a similar outcome, which would impact their fight for 3rd. Aston Martin claimed damage/a problem with the missing fuel sample, but the FIA didn't take that into account without sufficient evidence. Teams will claim whatever they need to to defend their position whether it's true or not.

Where does this come from? It directly contradicts what is said in the decision document "[h]ad the Competitor recognized this problem during qualifying they surely would have sought, and the FIA Technical Department confirmed, they would have received permission to fix the parts or tighten bolts if needed."

Fair enough, must have read it on here or another forum.

Sorry, might have been my fault:

Just read the verdict. The stewards basically accept that this was a failure of the DRS. In Merc’s words, “something has gone wrong”. The design itself is not in breach of the rules, but because Merc had a chance to identify the issue and didn’t fix it before qualifying, the penalty stands.

I didn’t mean that they definitely knew about it, just that in the eyes of the FIA, Merc had the potential opportunity to spot the problem and request a change under Parc-Fermé conditions.

The FIA decided that they couldn't make a judgement call on whether Hamilton's wing was broken before, during or after the last qualifying, but they could make a judgement call on what Verstappen might or might not have done when fiddling with Hamilton's wing. There's lot's of things I can bend 0.2 mm with my hands.

Interesting comments by Ted about the sprint for next year.

Six weekends, the sprint being its own little series. Sunday grid still being set by a qualifying session from Friday.

If they run it with the grid set by the qualifying session, I can't see it working well at all. Most of the time we'll see the order at the end of the first lap almost entirely determine things, with no option for strategy to mix things up.

Qualifying on Friday sets the grid position for Sunday but also sets a reverse grid for the sprint? That way the drivers will still push during normal qualifying but it’d really mix up the sprint.

Yeah, that'd work. And separated from the main championship, they might be able to get the teams to agree with it.

I’ve always scoffed at the thought of any kind of reverse grid but having seen Lewis’ charge yesterday, I’d be interested in seeing if it works.

It works very well in F2/F3 and others so I can't see why it wouldn't be fun to watch in F1. But, at the same time, it always feels very artificial so I wouldn't want it as part of the main championship in F1.

I've noticed ecause the sprints are effectively qualifying, we seem to see more attacking from some teams/drivers that doesn't translate into the full race and I can't quite fathom why. I can only assume the need to manage tyres and fuel is what's holding teams back over a full race distance.

So my lesson from the sprints is scrap them and give them more fuel and tyre for the main event.

Imo that drs thing was ridiculous and the fia should not have disqualified him, 0.2mm on just one part of the wing is a joke and the measurement is probably not that accurate.
What's more is if the fia had accepted it for the reasons that it was a small amount in a small area and likely caused by damage, I'm sure even RB would have been ok with it.

Yeah but the teams carry less fuel than they need deliberately to save weight. The tyres thing is very frustrating, it doesn't seem ethical driving around in circles waiting for your tyres to wear out.

I doubt they'd be ok with it. Didn't they flag it to the officials themselves? How did they know it was 0.2mm out? I've little doubt this whole thing was instigated by RB, honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Mad Max bent it himself.
