Yes something needs to be done about the gun culture in this country - but arming the police is not the solution.
Anyone who has had dealings with an average policeman will know they're not really the kind of people we want walking about the High Street with guns.

The police in Britain overwhelmingly don't want to be armed. It's pretty simple really, arm the police and gun crime will increase more proportionately. Arming the police will just put them in more danger.

Dont be stupid, arming the police is the worse thing to do. They would end up killing more innocent people. Even the small number of specially trained police have managed to kill quite a number of unarmed peeps. Take America, all the police are armed, has that stopped gun related crime or stopped people getting killed. NO.

As much as it would fantastic if they did treat them the same, you can't really expect them to, and it's not really something you can get annoyed at them with. Are you telling me if you worked in the police force, and one of your friends got shot, you wouldn't try and pull all resources to catch that person? Or would you just carry on, because you thought it morally abhorrent to do such a thing?

We have neither the resources nor the facilities for general arming of the police either.

We need to get guns out of our society, anybody caught with a gun should get a minimum of 15 years behind bars! I don't want to see the average Bobby on the beat carrying a gun but we need to come down HARD on those that have illegal weapons.

While I would normally agree with this type of comment (i'm a member of a gun club) I have to say that unfortunatly its swings and roundabouts. If you upgrade the Police to carry guns giving them the ability to return fire then it won't be long before the criminal is upgraded too.

If our police carried 9mm pistols, then in order to beat the police the criminals would have to carry bigger and better guns. In the Phillipines criminals dont even stop to ask questions. I've heard stories that they will just walk into banks/shops etc. and mow everyone down with machine gun fire because even their security guards being armed with guns.

I must admit I do like the idea of the non lethal taser approach because it would give a police officer distance between themselves and a would be criminal, but at the same time cannot really be used fataly against a officer if the weapon was taken from them.

Thay have tasers here in North Wales, but they've got an effective range of 21 feet, and can only be used by trained firearms officers which kind of defeats the object.

Well i would normally tell you not to worry about lenton, as it's as safe as houses (no pun intended), but now all the bad things i have ever heard can be justified.
In the last 2 years that i have lived around lenton boulevard i have seen nothing particularly bad, except when a group of my mates and their welsh rugby buddies from home were confronted outside some knifey teenagers then 'followed' home. But they took refuge in the happy return pub, where our good mate dave the landlord sorted out the kids outside. Don't ask me how, but he knows people

Lenton isn't the safest place, but there are always students around, so there is some safety in numbers. Just don't talk to any dodgy looking black guys down the boulevard at night, as they are the dealers, and are being watched by the police at the moment.

This happened about 3 miles away from me. It's a shame, the main problem with Nottingham is that we are a Metropolitan town with only a city police force. We just don't have the resources to deal with such incidents.

I for one hope whoever shot this poor young woman gets a big sentence, the Police woman makes a full recovery and continues to serve in the Police.

A study a few years old has 25% of US LEO gun shot vicitms being shot with their own weapons.

In other words you want to punish people carrying a gun worse than murders. so making sure that anyone using a gun illegaly would have absolutely no reason not to shoot first. A reminder the vast majority of gun crime does not currently involve shootings.

This is true. More often than not, guns are used as 'blunt instruments' in crime.
