BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

People are already moaning that the rebuild needs to be less Christian and more inclusive for the "new Europe"... Ugh
Yes, the restored monument should be exclusively "Roman Catholic", with the restoration paid for exclusively by "Roman Catholics" and only visited by committed, practising "Roman Catholics"

No, it should look exactly how it was before.

Why? It will never be the same, so why make a pitiful copy when you can make something new.

Most of it was damaged is a 18th- 19th century construct, hardly worth acknowledging when itself was a repair, France should make something more grand if it can.

There is nothing more grand than the European designs of old. Turning it into some modern mess of steel and glass would be a massive shame.

As said in this thread, the Dresden Frauenkirche was rebuilt and that looks incredible.

The Stare Miasto, (Old Town), of Warsaw was rebuilt after WW2, exactly as it had been prior to the war.
I was there in 1974, and it was beautiful.

Just like all the mosques that allow people to preach Christianity, right?

That's the problem with tolerance, inclusivity, etc. It's supposed to flow only in one direction.

******* hell what a load of nonsense. Tell me do churches allow Muslims to pray?? Do hindhu temples?? Oh what about Jewish synagogues??

I mean **** me I know Islam is a problem for you brain dead muppets in here. But using such a stupid ridiculous point to try and back your point is a massive fail.

So why should Notre Dame be "less Christian" and "more inclusive", if we don't generally expect any other faith's buildings to be inclusive of people of a different faith?

I'm not asking that any faith should open its buildings to preachers of a different faith, btw.

But the calls for "inclusivity" are always at the expense of the native/established culture, in that it should make way for a foreign culture.

Why should Notre Dame ditch its Christian heritage and become some sort of multi-faith building?

I don’t know?? I sure as hell don’t care either way, it’s a church so should remain Christian. Just like one of our mosques should stay Islamic

How does this impact on your life FoxEye? I'm confused as to why you have so much anger.
What do you think about Notre Dame? Should it be less Christian and more inclusive to people of other faiths?

If you have an opinion of your own feel free to share it. Don't be offended when other people share theirs, it's a discussion board after all.

Also, I'm quite calm!

e: Being apathetic to everything is not a good way to go through life. "It doesn't affect me, I will have no opinion. Oh wait now something does effect me but I'm screwed because I was apathetic to all the things to lead to that, and did nothing about it. Oops."

. . .
Why should Notre Dame ditch its Christian heritage . . .
Notre-Dame is, was and always has been a Roman Catholic Cathedral - it is not a Protestant or any other "Christian" Cathedral.

If you are going to adopt it as some wishy-washy "Christian" Cathedral, why not make it non-denominational?

Better yet, knock it down and put up social housing - for the many, not just the Papists :)

Can we stop with the off topic "ooh muslim" rubbish in this thread.

It's getting extremely tiring to see pretty much every possible thread where it could happen descend into "ooh but the muslims" and "this multiculturalism lol" junk.

It's off topic, it's disruptive and frankly tiring to try and deal with every single day from the same users.

It's fairly on-topic atm after comments about Notre Dame being updated to be more inclusive to other faiths. Bang-on topic, in fact.

Also get used the idea that people don't like "multi-culturalism". You can pretend this isn't the start of a backlash, but you'd be wrong. It's coming. All over Europe, it's coming.

Well I guess it is owned by the French state and they’re supposed to be secular.

Ideally buildings like that should be historic places to visit and simply run like various national trust properties.

It's owned by the state for historical reasons, but crucially it's leased back to the church at zero cost.

It's a religious building run by the church. It's a cathedral, for Pete's sake!

**** sakes, the only thing that’s coming is a slap.

Just because it’s about a religious building doesn’t mean you can segue into your hatred of someone else.

I went to a church in Amsterdam once, it was a nightclub. One of my mates lives in a flat built in an old church.

The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was a Cathedral then a Mosque and is now a museum.

Religion is stupid, religious people are lacking in critical thinking and/or just lying to themselves. Hopefully one day all religious buildings will either become museums/tourist attractions or just converted to a more practical use.
