BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

Very good, a basement joke.

Funny how I (a "right-wing" idiot clearly too stupid to understand the benefits of cultural enrichment) doesn't have to resort to personal attacks, yet the "enlightened" liberals use it as a go-to tactic in their "discussions".

One wonders who the real idiots might be.
Very good, completely off-topic.

Thanks, I did chuckle when I wrote it, glad you appreciated it too :D

I'd probably describe myself as centre right to be honest. I'm just not one of these modern far right angry incel racists, constantly shaking my fist at a cloud because life is so unfair and everyone else has it so much easier.

And you're very much of the "attack the man, not the argument" school. Perhaps because from what I've seen so far your arguments are a bit weak. Hopefully you'll up your game in time. Basement jokes might be funny (says you), but they don't win arguments about serious issues.

Your recent argument was "How does it affect you?"... as if this was all that mattered.

How does this impact on your life FoxEye? I'm confused as to why you have so much anger.

So 'not at all' is the answer then.

What about the Rotheram attacks et al? You could easily have made the same argument then (it would have been just as terrible).

So some kids got groomed in Rotherham... how does it affect you, personally, today? Well it doesn't. I don't live there. Does that mean I should not take a stance against it?

The "How does it affect you?" argument is really a non-argument at all. People see what is going on in the news and they see the overall direction their societies/countries/blocs/civilisations are heading.

And believe it or not, incidents such as these are cumulative and do indicate the direction of travel. Even whilst they might not individually affect each of us in any way.

Is that the lefties? I'm confused. Here's a smiley to demonstrate my confusion:

I'm not sure who he's describing, tbh. It can't be me as (amongst other things) I've never identified as an "incel".
I must have you mixed up with someone else then. I remember some involuntarily celibate guy here had a sig that said something like "35 candles (years old), zero kisses from women". Apologies in that case.

"Incel" is not something I associate myself with. It would appear to be some kind of self-applied group identity, rather than just someone who doesn't get attention (or might not even be looking for it...)

Tbh every time I've seen it used it seemed more like a word used to defame/discredit posters, rather than something people would self-identify as.

In any case, how could my dating success rate have anything to do with this topic? It's pure deflection. Character attacks for the sake of not having to address the argument at hand.

But hang on a minute. There hasn't been a cathedral on fire for days now, and no 'people' have called for other cathedrals to be repurposed as multi-faith venues, so the direction of travel is actually reversing. You're still unaffected, but actually things are getting better. Because they're not cumulative - cathedrals don't keep burning and only narrow minds keep perpetuating convenient truths from the past.

Just thought I'd requote.

This appears to be an argument created (or at most exaggerated from a few individuals) to vilify a certain group the far right already holds massive prejudices against.

Note also it is only the spire that needs to be rebuilt, so will still be a gothic cathedral, whatever that turns out to look like.

Indeed. Just a simple post on the internet in the right place with the 'right' audience, and suddenly a spark of outrage is fanned into flames. And it all started from a load of ********.

Quite frankly we have the ability to make a fantastic representation of gothic architecture with modern materials, the level of detail you can get out of metallurgy would be immense.

Using wood that France doesn’t even have is both arrogant and selfish, when alternatives are available.

It doesn’t need to be a boring flat glass-metal minimalist utilitarian debacle, a bit of faith in people is ironically required. I won’t begrudge them making it out of wood, but it seems awfully boring and not at all culturally relevant unless the design is in advance of the 19th century rebuild.

Lets face it the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Normans didn't really bother much with the place so the chances of of hordes of muslims invading Cornwall are pretty low I reckon.

Worst thing you've got to deal with is some Londoner buying a holiday home in your village or someone from Devon "stealing" a job none of the Cornish yokels were qualified to do in the first place. :p

As for the Cathedral, it seems like they've got more than enough money to rebuild the spire in solid gold if they wanted, I'm sure the Louis Vuitton group would be happy to cough up more if required.

Is @FoxEye a Parisian?

Why does what he think matter more than Parisians? Let's just leave it to them to look after their own building.

What right does FoxEye have to dictate what the French should do in this matter and what direction they take?

Does this pass for a discussion or a counter-argument then?

Does the left do discussions that aren't left-wing circle jerks? Do they just try to shut down all other discussions?

That's rhetorical, btw. The answer is obvious in this thread and others.

I'll be sure to let Macron know my diktats btw. He's waiting on line 2.

As for this... it doesn't even make sense. I read it twice. I can't interpret the words in any way that resembles a coherent point.

Enjoy discussing your strawman argument.

So what's the date for the Notre Dame conversion to a mosque?

More than $1 billion was promised by some of France's richest and most powerful families and companies, several of whom sought to outbid each other, in the hours and days after the inferno.

It prompted criticism that the donations were as much about the vanity of the donors wishing to be immortalised in the edifice's fabled stones than the preservation of France's heritage.

Francois Pinault of Artemis, the parent company of Kering that owns Gucci and Saint Laurent, promised $163 million, while Patrick Pouyanne, CEO of French energy company Total, said his firm would match that figure.

Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury giant LVMH that owns Louis Vuitton and Dior, pledged $327 million, as did the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation of the L'Oréal fortune.

None of that money has been seen, according to Mr Finot, as the donors wait to see how the reconstruction plans progress and fight it out over contracts.

Re: the vanity of the donors wishing to be immortalised in the edifice's fabled stones
If I had the monies and ties to the country and was coming to an age then I'd probably do the same thing.
