Britain secures agreement to join Indo-Pacific trade bloc

I've just seen Kemi Badenoch comparing this to "investing in a startup" - it might not be much now but in the future it could be...
How about investing in something that would almost instantly add at least 4% to GDP and happens to be across the Channel?
There is no world where the UK is stronger as a result of Brexit, its weakened the "Union" with massive anti-Brexit support in Scotland and Northern Ireland getting screwed, all it appears to have done is put the UK very much reliant again on being the lapdog of the USA

The EU is in decline whereas CPTTP is growing and will eclipse the EU in future from GDP perspective.

Anti unionism in Scotland is declining - Sturgeon defeated and the SNP self destructing - DUP will be back to power sharing soon.

Rejoiners will become irrelevant as CPTTP membership is completely incompatible with EU membership.

Labour win in the next election not the foregone conclusion it might have been a few months ago.

Sunny uplands.. :D

Is your typical rabid brexiteer happy or unhappy about this deal? Its hard to figure out as they've lost their sovereignty they worked so tirelessly to take back control, yet the ones I see think its a wonderful move.

I also think this is an area of concern:
https://www.theguardian.com/busines...-trade-bloc-that-includes-japan-and-australiaUnions condemned clauses in the deal that will allow large companies to sue the UK government behind closed doors if they believe their profits have suffered from changes to laws or regulations.

The TUC's general secretary, Paul Nowak, said: "This deal allows multinational corporations to sue the UK government in secret courts for introducing policies which threaten their profits – this could include an increase in the minimum wage or bringing energy companies back into public ownership."

What sovereignty do you think is lost? This is just a free trade deal albeit a massive one - all countries do these deals, this isn't remotely like being in the EU's clutches with all the constraints and loss of sovereignty that brings.

massive? boost of 0.08% that is hardly massive lol

I said massive trade deal - which it is - GDP for these countries will be greater than the EU soon. The EU is declining and CPTTP is growing.

We are not in the EU and will never rejoin so whatever anyone claims the GDP would be in it is completely irrelevant.

If the EU was just a free trade deal we would still be in it but its not.

go to better restaurants

Yeah I'm sure that is exactly what people on lower incomes will do. The same people who can't afford to buy the "finest" range at supermarkets and will now buy items made with the cheapests imported meat products because they are affordable, those same people who voted for Brexit.

we already had deals with most of them. This changes very little.

However, the gains for the UK from joining are expected to be modest. The UK already has free trade deals with all of the members except Brunei and Malaysia, some of which were rolled over from its previous membership of the EU.
And even with some gains in trading the government only estimates it will add 0.08% to the size of the economy in 10 years.
I'm not sure how much trade we expect to do with the two new countries. Maybe some cheaper durian imports to help fill the gaps in our fruit and vegetable aisles?

Evidence please?

True. What's that got to do with anything?

This is true, but as you know, there is always the possibility of leaving one trade bloc in order to persure the potential with another. I'm pretty sure we've done something like that before.
Labour win in the next election not the foregone conclusion it might have been a few months ago.
I think it is. Maybe not by 300+ MPs but by a a significant margin.

have you got any evidence of that? are we also going to move the uk closer to those countries? we may not be part of EU but we're part of europe and trading with your neigbours is the way forward. Imagine having to go get bread from other end of the country compared to the local bread maker, in simple terms. This what you're suggesting is the way forward, can't wait to get my bread from Manchester.

If China joins them presumably it would have much more of an impact than it currently does to our economy

Yes, we've had incredibly cheap international shipping for years, I think I've got packages from China for about £0.01 postage. Also, one of the partners is Canada, which geographically isn't that far.
