Only saving grace is the Argentine ability to deploy a viable amount of airpower is just lol, problem is if they can get in and hit our fighters on the ground we will have 0 air cover over the island, coupled with no option to shock them with the likes of Vulcan deployed bomb, i suppose we could launch a cruise missle instead but the stakes are now higher and no doubt the argies could see taking the island and its oil reserves as an easy way out of debt.

Argies wouldn't bother, they couldn't afford to start a war no matter what the benefits were in the long term... have Typhoon there is a strong deterrent as well as nuclear attack sub, garrison of troops on the island.

They are more prepared on the island.

I know a ship has a tour of duty for the next 6 months to protect the dilling platform because i know someones daughter who is on it, clearly this will be taking over from a ship that this currently stationed around the falklands, you have no idea on the location of the sub but no doubts one will be around that area, how many troops are on the island?
 
As someone who doesnt really know a lot about our current state re defense capabilities, would retiring the harriers actually put the harrier pilots out of a job? Can they not be re-trained to pilot other aircraft? *Possibly a very stupid question to people who know what they're on about*

We could be co-operation with the the USA and French air force to 'equip' are carriers for the short term. But we surely wont be selling it and it will be equiped with our own navy JSF eventually.

Re-trained yes, but what aircraft would you give them, RN/RAF dont have any spare

Harrier Pilots would likely make good helicopter pilots, they undertake a very base level of training on helicopters* when learning to hover the harrier. As for the rest of them there's always the airlines.

*At least they used to, I don't make a habit of chronicling the training path of Harrier pilots.
 
Just noticed with the axing of the MR2's and with the cancellation of the MRA4 we no longer have any maritime patrol aircraft? Isn't this of slight concern given that we are an erm island.......

Yeah but we'll have two new carriers that can patrol all that space with their air power.....when it gets delivered (on time and on budget)
 
No doubt it's already been bought up but in theory, couldn't Argentina invade the falklands the day Ark Royal gets scrapped and we would be unable to do anything?
 
Yes and No we have a surface vessel present, no doubt a nuclear sub around that side of the world, 5 (irrc) typhoons and some troops on the island, the Argies are in an even bigger mess than us and have out of date gear, problem is they could throw numbers at the island and it will take us 5 weeks to get to them and even then we couldn't provide any air cover, which = loss of the battle.

Problem is the stakes are higher than in the 80's its not just the island they want its the known amount of oil, our biggest response would be sticking several cruise missiles on the mainland and seeing how they like that.

Not in the same capacity as the MRA4's could, with state of the art sonar, radar and optical sensors.

Seriously, lacking a dedicated MPA is a massive headache, given that it leaves our submarine based nuclear deterrent vulnerable when leaving port.

The Argies have started to increase there defence spending.
 
I think given the spending on the MRA4's calling it quite now to save a few quid is the biggest mistake they are making, the second being the Ark Royal.

They could maintain a token amount 15 - 20 or so Harriers in service for the exclusive use off the Ark Royal, they could have done this by not doubling the money they give to poor places.
