Scrapping of Ark Royal - RN falling on their sword to cut millions in the short term and save other capabilities.

CATOBAR on one of the new carriers - A stealthy way (geddit) of scrapping the STOVL F-35, I reckon they'll get the catapult variant of the F-35 to appease the US. Failing that they'll get F/A-18s earlier than that and stick proverbial fingers at the yanks. Second carrier as a Heli landing platform.
Other possibility is mixed force of CATOBAR and STOVL F-35s, entirely feasible but I can't see it happning.

Right now our Anti-Air destroyers are virtually weaponless as the PAAMS hasnt been made operational, and with no carriers for the next 15 years, just what *CAN* the Royal Navy actually do?
PAAMS/ASTER was tested succesfully recently from HMS Dauntless.
It's funny that just now some Tornado F3s have just headed backed into Leuchars after being scrambled to go and escort some Russian Bears out of the UK airspace. Two days in a row now that the Russians are coming for a look.

Brilliant timing isn't it.

Its just Russia being Russia, nothing new really...

Yep definitely nothing new but very apt timing.

Suppose, but I guess that it could have been predicted Russia's we are bigger then you stance, all frills but no knickers... never really rated Russia as a creditable threat any more... but I understand where your coming from

One Harrier pilot, Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander Kris Ward asked the PM: "I have flown 140 odd missions in Afghanistan and I am now potentially facing unemployment. How am I supposed to feel about that sir?"

Mr Cameron thanked him for "everything" he had done for his country, but said there had been long discussions about the review and the military advice was that "it was right to keep the Typhoon as the principal ground attack aircraft, working in Afghanistan at the moment, and right to retire the Harrier".

I Bet the Lt Cdr was thinking "Shove your thanks up your arse you disingenuous ********!"

That was the thing I hated the most. Being thanked of politicians, when you know they couldn't give a **** about the servicemen.

A shame, as being an Island nation they have been quite useful for us in the past.

Yes, Dauntless fired 1 missile. Colour me unimpressed at present - this system is supposed to be able to handle multiple incoming threats, different heights/angles/speeds etc. When will it be properly tested?

Do you know who makes the F/A-18? We better put the fingers away.
More than aware thanks. The US won't be too happy if we pull out of the large project that they've got question marks over due to cost.
I dont think so, thats what HMS Ocean is for...

Stelly
You mean the ship that is rumoured to be getting mothballed?

HMS Ocean was built to commercial standards and only has a predicted life of 20 years which would put her out of service in 5 years time.

Don't think that means one of the new carriers will be used as a helicopter platform though, they are far to big and expensive for such a use, I think all the news comming out around this today points to some sort of deal with the French being done. They need a second carrier as one is a bit pointless and we want two but can't afford them so I suspect some sort of shared arrangment will be made. I really can't see them being launched one with COTOBAR and one without it makes no sense what so ever.

1 carrier active, other in reserve (not helicopter platform)... JSF carrier version (more capable), brought in around the same time as carriers... good good... glad that Labour ensured that the second could not be cancelled.

I think that it does not look too bad to be honest....

Being thankful to labour for something, it really has been one of those days.

Will both carrier be CATOBAR?

Told you we were going with the C :D

Quite frankly this could have gone worse, never a fan of defence spending cuts but needs must.

I just hope the Falklands doesn't kick off again in the next 10 years.

What do the Tories have against aircraft carriers, didn't thacther do the same thing?

Edit:

Bloody hell, read this

Decommission either the helicopter landing ship HMS Ocean or HMS Illustrious following a short study of which would provide the most effective helicopter platform capability, and place one landing and command ship at extended readiness;
Decommission four frigates and a Bay-class amphibious support ship

And there goes the HMS Illustrious
