**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

I mean, it was hardwork and I enjoyed that but it was more annoying because if he would just listen.. :@

Also, its all the better when I'm being paid to do it ;)

Haha gotcha, I thought it was an event or something. Been reading the arrse forums and others, talking about bridge building.. figured it was similar to that :)

Quick one hadn't posted in a while if anyones got REME related questions, more black hand stuff not tech-spankers feel free to fire anything my way and I'll try help.

I've been thinking seriously recently about joining up with the forces, my parents and other relatives have been telling me to do it for years but I've always dismissed the idea thinking that it just wasn't for me (mainly my naive thinking in the past that I would be sent straight to Iraq and be killed blah blah). However, now I am a bit older (23) and in light of recent events and an ambition to do something totally different career wise it has made me think that maybe the Army could be something that I would be interested in now.

Though I have no idea where to start! I do know what I want to do though or along the lines of, which is being an IT Systems or Communications technician/engineer/analyst.

The only thing that worries me is adapting to lifestyle changes and having to possibly live a new life mostly abroad, and whether I really would be able to hack the Army in general.

Could anyone possibly give me a bit of advice or if anyone has gone down the IT/Communications route within the army, share their story?

Many thanks - Liam

Army is coming home, overseas posts are drying up, so you are probably mostly going to be in the UK, separation wise, monday to friday you'll be with your unit away from home, friday you'll go home for the weekend and your barracks will be a ghost town.

Army isn't especially difficult to handle, do your job and you won't be in trouble, mess up and you will.

Can't really comment on the job choice your thinking of but Royal sigs probably has something for you, theres signallers who post on here who can help.

If you're intelligent join the RAF as an ICT tech instead ;) :P

Edit: I'll be a little bit more helpful. From what you have said and the way you said it seriously consider the RAF ICT tech trade. You actually get treated like an adult in the RAF. I've just spent a few weeks on a course with mostly army sigs and we were gobsmacked with how they get treated and how very little IT knowledge they actually have!

Myself, Zefan(NOOB) and a few others on here are all ICT techs and are happy to answer any questions you have. :)

Many thanks for your output there :) I think a trip to my local Army careers office is going to be on the cards soon.

Andr3w - RAF is another possibility too, however I haven't got all that many ICT qualifications behind me to prove it...

I will also look forward to other members replies.

Liam

Liam you don't need any ICT qualifications behind you.

As long as you have the correct number of GCSE's then you are good to go. After your initial 10 weeks training at RAF Halton you will do around 14 months at RAF cosford where you will learn everything from radar/sat comms/radio comms/windows server etc as well as doing CCNA! After that you do 18 months at your first unit which you will acquire an NVQ AND and advanced apprentiship :)
