**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Oh I forgot to mention that I haven't really got any decent GCSE's behind me either :(

The ICT qualifications I have got behind me though are two City & Guilds diplomas.

You might be ok with that. Where's your local AFCO? Just nip in and ask to spec to the RAF desk. It will be a completely informal chit chat. They will give you leaflets and booklets etc. you can also do the same with the Navy and Army.

Looking on the RAF website states my local one is in my city centre which is handy. The RAF website states that to be an ICT Technician I will need 3 GCSE's at grade C behind me (which I haven't got unfortunately). Though they could make an exception, seeing as I have got my 2 IT diplomas behind me?

Will take a look at the Navy too :)

Thanks - Liam

I have heard they make exceptions in some cases. Since you have gone on to do more qualifications it's worth investigating it. Good luck.

Surprised no one has posted this here (I'm guessing there is an entire thread somewhere discussing it).

So in light of applying to join the forces right now I'd consider your options carefully and look at trades that are less likely to shrink in the coming years. However, considering most of the units being axed are frontline/infantry units it's likely to have knock on effect on most trades further down the line at some point?

Don't quite understand the decision on which units are getting the chop - I would rather see none go, but:

Guards - why are they immune.
Para's - again why not them
Rifles - 5 battalions and they keep them all
Gurkha's - foreign mercenaries, untouchable though

Some regiments are down to a single battalion, they must be feeling mightily upset at the above units getting away free.

Valid points, I'm sure we will see more chops in the near future though :(

Bet the military chiefs in Argentina are sitting down to watch this. Popcorn buckets in hand.

WTH is the govt thinkin chewing up our military????!!

Money money money.

To be honest I can't help but think it's kind of right... over the past 10 years I think most places have got used to running with the manning level that goes with having lots of guys out in Afghanistan/training to go out to Afghanistan/on leave from being in Afghanistan... so it makes sense that with our withdrawal that manning now becomes surplus to requirements.

But lets say in...oh I dunno...lets say in 2025 our friends way down south decide they wanna try Round 2 on the Falklands.

Will we be able to throw em out again with such severe cuts? I know we will have some good tech like the new carriers, JSF, Eurofighter etc. But what about the troops and such. Im no expert in all of this just wondering.

Feel bad for military people being cut, I mean they are out there takin bullets but knowing they are going home to the Job Centre.

It didn't work before when we literally a handful of Royal Marines defending it. Now we've got 4+ Typhoons on quick reaction all the time and long range RADAR that can see all the way to the Argentine coast, I don't reckon they've got any chance at all. They would only try such a thing if - like back in the 80s - they thought they'd get away with it and not take any/minimal casualties. That would never be the case now. They were just landing on some rocky field back in the 80s and claiming it, now they would be having to deal with thousands of troops that are there every day of the year... they would suffer severe casualties! I'm sure if they had any idea that we would be ballsy enough to come and take them back like we did, they would never have touched the islands in the first place.

Oh cool...cool that we got radar that can see all the way to their coast. So if they try any funny business their air force gets turned into recycled soda-can material.

Also I seem to remember that our Typhoons...dont have a gun? They replaced it with ballast! Hope they have given at least some of them the cannon. America learnt that the hard way in Vietnam....

I'd imagine they look at effectiveness rather than fairness when it comes to the cuts.

The better units in the Army will be the last to suffer from cuts.

Well unfortunately not quite... they would almost certainly travel at sea level to avoid detection (the RADAR only sees in a straight line, so sea level out to about 50 miles due to the curvature of the earth) which means we'd only have about 5-10 minutes until they were on top of the radar stations.

I have no idea about that, but from what I saw of them flying over us every other day for 4 months, they definitely carry nasty anti-air missiles constantly.

We need satellite surveillance surely to keep an eye on them due to the radar limitations! We need to launch one into one of those geostationary positions. No escape from cameras 400 miles or so above the surface!
